Jean Calvert, pioneer in special education
Jean McGurty Calvert, 80, of DeMossville, a pioneer in special education, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence.
Mrs. Calvert began promoting special education for mentally handicapped children shortly after World War II, at a time when virtually nothing out of the ordinary was being done to help students with special needs.
After beginning her career teaching in New Jersey, Mrs. Calvert moved to the Cincinnati area and became principal of Riverview School in Covington.
She later taught special education for the Northwest Local School District in Hamilton County and in the Cincinnati Public School district for 34 years before retiring 18 years ago.
"She got interested in special education because she had a daughter with Down syndrome, " said Mrs. Calvert's step-daughter, Marcia Lee Gardner of Crescent Springs. "She was one of the pioneers in getting special schooling for retarded children and in getting training for teachers to help the students."
Mrs. Calvert also worked for the Hamilton County Board of Mental Retardation and was very involved in the Special Children's Camp program for years at the old Camp Marydale in Kenton County, Mrs. Gardner said.
She was a member of the National Retarded and Developmental Association, the National Education Association and the Retired Teachers Association.
After retirement, she began devoting more time to one of her favorite hobbies, raising horses.
She was a member of the National Paso Fino Horse Association and some of her show horses won first prize ribbons.
Mrs. Calvert also enjoyed square dancing and making quilts.
"She was a very positive person who enjoyed getting involved in activities and helping others, " said Mrs. Gardner.
