Eleanor Seger, parks advocate
Eleanor Birkenhauer Seger, a longtime advocate for parks and recreation in Campbell County, died Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.
The long-time resident of Highland Heights was 90.
Mrs. Seger was a former Highland Heights park commissioner, and she served on the city's recreation committee for 17 years.
The Kentucky Post named her Citizen of the Month in April 1986 for her contributions to Northern Kentucky's parks.
April 17, 1993, was declared Eleanor Seger Day in Highland Heights, and a shelter house in Veterans Park is named after her.
Her first husband, Camillus Bankemper, died in 1945. "After the war, her neighbor from across the street came home from the Navy.
They started talking, started dating and then they married, " said her son, John Seger Jr. of Alexandria.
Mrs. Seger never graduated from high school, but she passed an entrance exam to get into the University of Cincinnati's night school and earned a degree in interior decorating, her son said.
She later worked as an interior decorator for Shillito's and Pogue's department stores.
She was a member of St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas, president of the St. Thomas Mothers Club and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Her second husband, John Seger Sr., died in 1993.
Other survivors include three other sons, Charles Seger of Highland Heights, Daniel Seger of Greenville, S.C., and Herbert Seger of Southgate and John J. Seger Jr. of Alexandria; brothers, Herbert Birkenhauer and Murdock Birkenhauer, both of Alexandria, and Richard Birkenhauer of Bellevue; sisters, Ethel Hilscq of Phoenix, Agnes Mader of Alexandria, Clotildacq Prince of Philadelphia, Esther Scharps of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Charlotte Volpenhein of Southgate; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

James W. Collins, 59, of Taylor Mill, died Monday at home.
He was a retired machinist with General Mills.
Survivors include sons, James C. Collins of Loganville, Ga., and William L. Collins of Florence; a daughter, Lori A. Gilbert of Taylor Mill; sisters, Mary Ann Stone of Hebron, Sandy Martin of Cincinnati and Debbie Murrell of Walton; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Jeffrey Daniel, 34, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at his home.

Freda V. Gadd, 73, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a retired clerk with Baldwin Piano.
Survivors include a brother, Harold G. Gadd of Fort Thomas; and sisters, Ruby Hoffman of Cincinnati and Phyllis Maybury of Denver.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday.

Alafair Gibson, 91, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.

Thomas R. Malone, 97, of Augusta, died Sunday at his home.
He was a retired farmer and employee of Liberty Warehouse, Maysville.
He was a former Bracken County Water District commissioner, and a member of the Burley Warehouse Association and Herfert Cattle Association. His wife, Edna Mae Leming Malone, died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Malone of Augusta; a daughter, Kathleen Malone of Nicholasville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Thursday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Dover.

Joan Bernadine Kroger Meadows, 69, of Cold Spring, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a homemaker and a member of Hamilton County Police and Fire Widows Group.
Her husband, Herman V. Meadows, died in 1992.
Survivors include a sister, Genevieve K. Huber of Fort Thomas; nieces and nephews.
