Wilbert Muench, 85, a local Knights of Columbus founder
Wilbert J. "Skeeter" Muench believed that when he started something, he ought to stick with it.

He worked for the same company, Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Cincinnati, where he was a glazier, for 35 years before retiring.

He helped to start the Knights of Columbus Father De Jaco Council No. 5220 in Alexandria in 1960 and remained a member for 41 years.

He was married to his wife, Betty, for 54 years, a union ended only by his death Wednesday of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 85.

"He was a very committed person, " said Mr. Muench's son, Tim Muench, of Alexandria. "If he said he was going to do something, he did it. Come hell or high water, he stuck with it."

Mr. Muench, who got his nickname so long ago that even his wife doesn't know the story behind it, liked to spend time outside in the yard of his Alexandria home.

"He loved to work in his flowers and would always give flowers from the yard on Mother's Day, " Tim Muench said. "He had a riding mower and would cut the neighbors' grass, and they would try to pay him, and he'd refuse."

Mr. Muench also loved to frolic with his grandchildren, despite ar thritic knees that hobbled him in later years.

"When he was 71, he got down on the floor and, bad knees and all, gave my daughter, Lauren, who was 1, a piggy-back ride, " Tim Muench said. "I'll never forget that."

Mr. Muench only began to slow down earlier this year when his wife became seriously ill, Tim Muench said. "He was worried about her. He went downhill after that."

Mr. Muench was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Bishop Flaget Assembly, a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 and an Army veteran of World War II.
