Alice Faye Hedger, teacher and a woman of great faith
Alice Faye Hedger was a teacher in Grant County and a teller at a Williamstown bank.
But most importantly, her family says, Ms. Hedger was a woman of great faith.
And she didn't keep quiet about it.
After Ms. Hedger was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1995 and had a bone marrow transplant in 1996, she had a new group of people to witness to.
"The cancer was in and out of remission for years, but she beat it, " said her son, Dwayne Edward Rider of North Hollywood, Calif.
"When she was going through treatments, she would witness to other cancer patients.
"She spoke of her faith in Jesus and assured people that, 'My God told me I will not die of cancer."'
Ms. Hedger's family believes she was right.
They say the medical experts aren't certain what she died of Thursday. In July, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor, but it was slowly shrinking with radiation treatments.
Ms. Hedger spent some time in the hospital and at an extended care facility.
But her children brought her home to her residence in Williamstown on Wednesday and her son and two daughters - Trina Annette Jolly of Independence and Tracey Allyson Rider of Williamstown - were at her bedside when she died. She was 60.
"I think she was just ready to be with the Lord, " said Ms. Jolly.
Ms. Hedger was a native of Grant County, and taught a variety of subjects at Grant County High School in the 1960s and 1970s.
During the 1980s and 1990s, she worked as a teller and a bookkeeper at the Grant County Deposit Bank.
She was a saleswoman for Mary Kay Cosmetics, a member of the American Business Women's Association and Community Pentecostal Church in Independence.
