Bartley 'Dutch' Stenger, printer, loved traveling
Bartley "Dutch" Stenger died Friday evening at St. Elizabeth North Hospital after numerous operations and complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 68.
"He went through seven operations and I'm just glad he doesn't have to go through any more, " said his wife, Barbara Stenger. "I will miss him so much, but at least he's not in pain now."
Mr. Stenger, a printer, worked the evening shift at John Swift Printing for many years. He enjoyed working in the evenings because it gave him more time to spend together with her during the day, his wife said.
"They were inseparable for almost 42 years, " said their daughter, Jennifer Stenger, of Florence. "It was very rare that you'd see one without the other. They were just that close."
Known as "Dutch" since childhood - a nickname he inherited from his father - Mr. Stenger was raised in Bellevue, but lived in the Oakley neighborhood of Cincinnati and Edgewood before moving to Florence in recent years.
He loved traveling, crossword puzzles and gaming at Indiana's riverboat casinos, his wife said. He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
