Bud Deglow had appreciation for fully living his life
Bud Deglow always said, "If you haven't done anything, you haven't lived."
Mr. Deglow did a lot of living.
In his 85 years, Sterling "Bud" Deglow trained homing pigeons for World War II, flew mail for the postal service, lost his pilot's license for buzzing the Island Queen, got shot in the leg for defending a kitten, became a hero for a day for fending off a Brinks truck robbery, celebrated 65 years of marriage and raised three girls with an appreciation for living life to the fullest.
Mr. Deglow, 85, of Independence, died at 3 a.m. Thursday at one of his daughters' homes in Amelia, Ohio.
Mr. Deglow retired in 1979 after serving 35 years as a Brink's Armored Car guard. His daugh ter, Carol Booso of Cincinnati, said her father spoke of only one robbery attempt in all those years. He fended off that thief with words instead of weapons.
In fact, his closest call with an armed man came not on the job, but at home. After someone killed her new kitten, Mrs. Booso said her father got shot as he spoke in the animal's defense .
His love of animals also manifested itself in his lifelong hobby of training homing pigeons. In World War II, the whole country benefited from his skills.
"When we lived in Covington, he had homing pigeons there and the government said they needed them for the war, " said Mrs. Booso. "They would put messages on them in the war."
Mr. Deglow was also a self-employed commercial artist and electrician as well as a U.S. Post al Service pilot.
He had a bit of the prankster in him, which ultimately cost him his pilot's license.
"He was up one day and he goofed off and dove down on the Island Queen and scared the people half to death, " his daughter said. "So they reported him and they took his license away."
