Carl J. Sandfoss, 87, florist
Florist Carl J. Sandfoss never wanted to work for anyone besides himself.
He feared having a boss would limit his authority to occasionally give away a flower, something friends and family say he was fond of doing, especially to children.
So, for 52 years Mr. Sandfoss owned and operated Sandfoss Florists in Campbell County before closing its doors three years ago.
"The (nursery) was his life, and he didn't want to give it up" said daughter Diane Kruse, of Alexandria. "He knew most of his customers really well and enjoyed talking to them, so he never thought of it as work."
Mr. Sandfoss, 87, of Highland Heights, died Monday at his home.
After taking over the nursery from his father-in-law, Mr. Sandfoss decided to keep the nursery a family business, working each day alongside his wife, Martha. Their children pitched in each spring when flowers were in bloom, and some even returned to help after they were grown and had jobs of their own.
The nursery greenhouse provided sanctuary for one of Mr. Sandfoss's favorite hobbies, horseshoes. He constructed an indoor range to keep sharp during the winter months in preparation for his Wednesday night competitions with friends during the summer.
He was a member of the Catholic Order of Forresters, St. Joseph Seniors, Bluegrass Seniors, Cincinnati Florist Growers Association and the O.K. Horseshoe Association.
