Katherine Ross, 92, medal-winning athlete
Katherine "Kay" Ross didn't take up golf until she turned 60, but she kept at it, winning medals in that sport as well as swimming and bowling as a great-grandmother.
"She gave up golf at 85 when she couldn't find a partner her age, " said her son, Harry Ross of Floyd Knobs, Ind.
Though she wasn't a particularly good golfer - "it broke her heart when she learned her 'whiffies' were counted as strokes, " her son said - she always enjoyed the game and was a member of the First Golfers Ladies League at Devou Park.
She was a much better bowler, however. She won at least 11 medals at the Senior Olympics in bowling, golf and swimming, her son said.
Mrs. Ross, 92, died at 9:50 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. The lifelong Covington resident was a homemaker.
Her brother, Army Sgt. Harry Lawler, was killed at Anzio in Italy during World War II, but was awarded the distinguished service cross and the Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and the Brooks-Lawler Army Reserve Center in Fort Thomas are named after him, Harry Ross said.
She loved to travel and give tea parties for her granddaughters and great-granddaughters, Harry Ross said. She also was a founding member of the Fort Wright Rescue Squad and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.
Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Ross, in 1968.
In addition to son Harry Ross, she is survived by sons William A. Ross of Naperville, Ill., and Benjamin J. Ross of Cincinnati; daughters, Kathleen Lee of Houston and Mary Ross of Park Hills; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.
Paul Martin Buchholz, 72, of Centerville, Ohio, formerly of Bellevue, died Monday at Washington Manor Nursing Home, in Centerville. He was a stationary engineer with General Electric, Cincinnati.
Survivors include daughters, Paula J. Buchholz of Kettering, Ohio, and Susan Buchholz of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Stephen Buchholz of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, two sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
Dorothy L. Cobb, 76, of Owenton, died Monday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Danny Cobb of Owenton and Lanny Cobb of Lexington; a brother, Charlie Lusby of Owenton; a half-brother, L.C. Lusby of Cynthiana; a sister, Patsy Hodge of Frankfort; and half-sisters, Melody Stafford of Owenton and Jeanette Dempsey of New Columbus; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Owenton First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. David Roy England, 38, of Independence, died Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Betty S. Fleming, 68, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Norton Suburban Hospital, Louisville.

Anne Gibbs, 74, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired auditor with Central Trust Bank.
Survivors include nieces, Cathy Samad of Burlington, Pattie Schneider of Covington, Patti Brown of Union and Pam Hutchinson of Cincinnati; and nephews, Tom Poole of Lakeside Park, Richard Gibbs of Louisville, Ed McNabb of Carrollton and Lou McNabb of Worthington, Ohio.

Sylvan D. Martin, 86, of Newport, died Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was an electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 212 and was a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Carrie Martin, died in 1991.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Martin of Timonium, Md.; and sisters, Rhoda Sissy Quesinberry of Stuart, W.Va., and Thelma Sowers of Hillsville, Va.

Ella Mae Napier, 92, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Nick Napier, died in 1960.

Jack Mitchell Sumpter Jr., 46, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at his home. He was a machinist with Riegler Farm Machinery, Dry Ridge, and a member of Shiloh Christian Church, Williamstown.
Survivors include his wife, Etha Lee Sumpter; stepsons, Ronnie Goins of Dry Ridge and Rickey Goins of Dayton, Texas; stepdaughters, Diane Hamilton of Dayton, Texas, Kay Monhollen and Donna Rose, both of Williamstown, Helen Barnes of Corinth and Julia Hornsby of Crittenden; his father, Jack Sumpter Sr. of Demossville; his mother, Jean Bailey of Owenton; stepbrothers, Shane Sumpter, Stacey Wilson and Scott Wilson, both of Demossville and Dan Bailey of Erlanger; sisters, Pam Richerson of East Enterprise, Ind., Kim Bishop of Sparta and Stella Wiley of Independence; and step-grandchildren.

Stella Fryman Wagoner, 85, of Robertson County, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a former homemaker and farmer, and a member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church. She also attended Kentontown Christian Church. Her husband, Lee A. "Buck" Wagoner, and a son, Johnnie Lee Wagoner, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcella Wagoner Thompson of Robertson County; brothers, Leroy Fryman, Thurman Fryman and John Fryman, all of Robertson County, Luther Fryman of Harrison County and Donald Fryman of Nicholas County; sisters, Bee Carter, Alice Hopkins and Edna Wright, all of Harrison County, and Eula Cooper of Robert County; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ellaree Sullivan Walther, 90, of Covington, died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469. Her husband, Max Walther, died in 1984. A son, Raymond Sullivan, died in 1975.
Survivors include sons, Leo Sullivan of Cincinnati, Harold Sullivan and Bill Sullivan, both of Florence, and Bob Sullivan of Spring Hill, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
