Norbert Berberich, electrician
During the Great Depression, Norbert J. Berberich's family needed him at work, not at school. So he dropped out of school after finishing the sixth grade at St. John's School in Campbell County, but never gave up his dream of owning his own business.
"When my dad set his mind to do something, he got it done, " said Jack Berberich, of Villa Hill s, a son. After working as an electrician for many years, Mr. Berberich did realize his dream, owning and operating B&J Electric in Cincinnati for eight years before retiring.
The "B" in B&J; Electric, Mr. Berberich died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was 89.
There's even a street named after him -- Berberich Drive in Mount Zion, Boone County. Mr. Berberich's sons took that action as a tribute to their father.
Born in Morning View, Mr. Berberich bought a farm in Burlington and lived there until about 10 years ago, when the family moved to Villa Hills.
"He was an industrious person, self-taught and very motivated, " Jack Berberich said. "He thought education was very important, probably because he never had that opportunity himself."
Mr. Berberich was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local No. 212, Cincinnati; St. Joseph Church, Crescent Spring; the Knights of Columbus and Summit Hills Country Club, Edgewood. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and golf, Jack Berberich said.
