Bill Eiler, veteran of Pearl Harbor
The patriotism that has reignited the American spirit in the past two months has always burned brightly in Bill Eiler's heart.
At the age of 16, it prompted him to join the Army shortly before America's entry in World War II, even though he was two years too young to enlist.
"He just said he was 18, " said his daughter, Kristi Eiler-Myers. "He went all over the South Pacific." His service included duty at Pearl Harbor, which Ms. Eiler-Myers said her father regarded as "his finest hour."
Willard "Bill" Eiler, Jr., 76, of Covington, died Wednesday morning at Rosedale Manor.
Though 60 years had passed since Bill Eiler served in the U.S. Army on that fateful day at Pearl Harbor, his daughter said he remembered the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack clearly.
"He said they were all going to breakfast and at first they just thought the Navy was doing training exercises, " said Ms. Eiler-Myers.
"But he was reported missing in action ... (Relatives) were not notified otherwise until several months after that."
Mr. Eiler studied to become an accountant upon his return from the service.
He retired as comptroller for Cas-Ker Company in Cincinnati in 1993.
Before that he held accounting positions with White Villa groceries and Litwin Jewelers.
Mr. Eiler was a member and former secretary of Covington Lodge 109 F&AM and Golden Rule 345 F&AM.
He also was a member of William O. Ware Lodge of Research, Indra Consistory of the Scottish Rite and the Latonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Safreed Eiler of Covington; a son, Kurt Eiler of Covington; two daughters, Karen Thacker of Cold Spring and Ms. Eiler-Myers of Dayton; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial follows the service at Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill.
Robert Glenn Baker, 54, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West.
He was a starter for Boone Links Golf Course.
Survivors include his mother, Mary A. Baker of Florence; a brother, Donald R. Baker, and a sister, Terri Taylor, both from Florence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be there from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Burial will be Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Union.

Harry Butler, 54, of Falmouth, died Thursday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was a farmer.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home.
Florence Daugherty, 95, formerly of Falmouth, died Thursday, at St. Joseph hospital in Lexington.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Robert D. Glacken, 52, of Covington, died Nov. 17 at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Artie; a son, Robert Glacken Jr., of Erlanger; a daughter, Jenny Moermond of Cincinnati; a brother, Larry Barber of Bromley; sisters, Judy Allen and Patsy Russell of Bromley, and Corine Austin of Toledo, Ohio, and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Zelta McAnally, 66, of Owenton, died Thursday at her home.
Ms. McAnally was a registered nurse at Owen County Memorial Hospital.
She was retired from Three Rivers District Health Department, and she was a member of South Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, David McAnally of Monterey; daughters, Brenda Smith and Cathy Chappell, both of Owenton; brothers, Jim and Garry Fulkerson of Franklin, Ind; a sister, Jean Wood of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton.
Visitation will be be there from 4 to 9 p.m. today.
Burial will be in Owenton IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or South Fork Baptist church.
Denise Lynn Rachford, 42, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a clerk for Snappy Tomato Pizza, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include sons, Adam Turner of Newport, Nicholas Wayne Rachford and James Ryan Rachford of Ludlow; brothers, William T. Rachford Jr. of Alexandria, Ronald T. Rachford of St. Bernard, Ohio; Mark A. Rachford Sr., of Crittenden, Stephen W. Rachford of Highland Heights and Timothy K. Rachford of Alexandria; sisters, Theresa A. Arnold of Alexandria and Constance V. Roll of California.
Services will be at noon Monday at Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Leo Schnnorbus, 79, of Edgewood, died at 10:48 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Florence Anna Hogan Wilder, 76, of Lakeside Park, died Tuesday at Bayley Place Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Ernest Wilder, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Connie McKierman, Monica Kuhlman and Kathy Schmitt; brothers, Wally Hogan, Tom Hogan, Dick Hogan and Joe Hogan; and 16 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Baylay Place Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will will be in St. Joseph New Cemetery.

Shirley Ann Wolfe, 53, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters, Sherrie McCarthy of Virginia Beach, Fla., Tracy Glahn of Alexandria, Crystal Wolfe and Patricia Wolfe, both of Cincinnati; sons, Norbert Gibson of California, Anthony Wolfe of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Brian Wolfe of Cincinnati; brothers, Billy Elam and Bobby Elam of Cincinnati, Chuckie Hendrickson of Cincinnati, Ricky Hendrickson of Cincinnati and Doodie Elam of Cincinnati; sisters, Vicky Hinton of Cincinnati and Barbara Eapmon of Cincinnati, and 12 grandchildren.
