Carl M. Rogg Sr., 87, Dayton council member

Carl M. Rogg Sr., longtime Dayton city council member who championed the Dayton floodwall, died in his sleep Thursday at his home. He was 87.

Mr. Rogg served on council for more than two decades, from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s.

"He was instrumental in getting the floodwall, " said his son, Carl Rogg Jr. of Dayton. "It was a long, drawn-out thing. They had to get together and really push it."

Mr. Rogg also worked to get senior citizen housing built on the site of the former Spears Hospital.

He was born in Dayton and was a paratrooper in France, England and Germany during World War II. As a young man he raced motorcycles and later was a driver in hydroplane races on the Ohio River, said his daughter, Gerry Furnish of Bellevue.

"He was quite a daredevil, " she said. "He wasn't afraid of anything."

He and his wife, the late Pearl Rogg, raised eight children. Mr. Rogg worked in factories and later was an installer for Tom Rechtin Heating and Air Conditioning in Bellevue.

"We were poor, but we didn't know it. He always made sure we had what we needed, " Mrs. Furnish said. Family outings were fishing trips and picnics.

Mr. Rogg played guitar and formed a band with his brother and friends. They played at local clubs from the 1940s through the 1960s.

"He tried to see the humor in things. He taught me to have faith in people and to make the best of what you've got, " Mrs. Furnish said.

Her father had a strict set of values, including hard work and fair play, his daughter said. After retiring at age 65, he took a part-time job as a security guard at the Disabled American Veterans headquarters in Cold Spring, where he worked until he was 80.

He was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and recently had some small mini-strokes.

Other survivors include sons, Daniel Rogg of Sarasota, Fla., Dennis Rogg of Loveland, Ohio, Joseph Rogg of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Rogg, Kenneth Rogg and William Rogg, all of Dayton; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
