2nd deputy sheriff dies
LEXINGTON - A second deputy sheriff died following a shootout in Jessamine County earlier this month, which killed one deputy at the scene and injured another, state police said.
Jessamine County Sheriff's Capt. Chuck Morgan, 51, died at 2:12 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, according to Kentucky State Police.
He had been in critical condition at the hospital since the Nov. 13 shooting.
"It's been a sorrowful two weeks, " Jessamine County Sheriff Joe Walker said at a news conference Wednesday. "We bury one of our own, and then stand by and watch as another lost his struggle for life.
Although our grieving continues we will continue to work through this."
Deputy Billy Walls, 28, of Nicholasville, died the day of the shooting.
Deputy Sammy Brown, 29, also of Nicholasville, was released from UK hospital on Saturday.
Brown has not returned to work, Walker said.
The three deputies were trying to serve a misdemeanor warrant for terroristic threatening to Phillip Walker, 75.
Walker opened fire on the officers as they entered his drydocked houseboat in rural Jessamine County.
The deputies returned fire, killing Walker, who had shot 11 rounds from a .30-caliber M-1 carbine.
On the day of the shooting, a deputy had described the department as "a close-knit family."
Kentucky State Police spokeswoman Lt. Lisa Rudzinski said Morgan died of injuries he sustained from the shooting.
Lt. Rudzinski would not comment on specific injuries pending an autopsy report.
Morgan was an 11-year veteran of the Jessamine Sheriff's Department and a lifetime resident of Jessamine County.
He is survived by a father, two brothers, and an adult son.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Louise H. Barlow, 79, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at Woodcrest Manor, Erlanger.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Charles "Whitey" Govan Sr., of Newport, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired roofer and co-proprietor of Bill & Whitey's Cafe in Newport.
He was a member of the Local 42 Roofers Union, Cincinnati, and Covington Turners Club.
Survivors include daughters, Tina Govan and Cheryl Lawson, both of Newport; sons, Charles P. Govan of Newport and Kenny Govan of Latonia; sisters, Josie Kremer of Bellevue, Loraine Moore of Taylor Mill, Mary Smith of Alexandria and Carol Buckler of California; brothers, James Smith of Butler, Thomas Kidney of Fort Thomas, John Govan of Melbourne and Walter Govan of Silver Grove; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor.
Albert "Dee" Paul McBee, 80, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a retired welder with Barrows Sign Corp. and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mona Kilburn McBee; daughters, Patricia C. Swain of Lexington, Linda C. Anderson of Winfield, Tenn., Pamela J. Luttrell of Dry Ridge and Vicki S. McBee of Independence; sons, Michael D. McBee of Covington, Steven D. McBee of Macon, Ga., and William E. McBee of Butler; sisters, Marie Robbins of Deer Park, Ohio, and Hazel Hacker of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, Dick McDaniel of Cincinnati; 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ellen C. Stafford Tolbert, 81, of Owenton, died Tuesday at Baptist Hospital East, Louisville.
She was an employee of Electric Parts in Georgetown and retired from Fruit of the Loom.
She was a member of Mussel Shoals Baptist Church.
Her husband, Floyd Tolbert, and a son, Frankie Tolbert, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Holbert of Owenton, Kay Toftness of Frankfort and LeVonnie Cornett of Owen County; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
