Rev. Monsignor Hickey, 81, diocese chancellor
Rev. Monsignor Edward Thomas Hickey spent virtually his entire life serving the Catholic church and its followers.
"He knew even before he went to high school that he wanted to be a priest, " said Monsignor Hickey's sister, Mary Hickey of Fort Wright. "His life turned out the way he had planned it as a youngster."
Monsignor Hickey, 81, of Fort Thomas, former chancellor of the Diocese of Covington and former pastor of Mother of God Church in Covington, died at 12:25 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Mrs. Hickey said the boyhood death of Monsignor Hickey's older brother may have inspired his decision to devote his life to the church. "Edward was 11 when our brother James died of spinal meningitis at age 12, " she said. "They had been very, very close.
"Edward never said why he decided at such an early age to become a priest, but the death of James might have had an effect. As soon as Edward finished high school, he went right into the seminary."
Monsignor Hickey was ordained in 1945 and served as an assistant pastor until he was named the spiritual director of Newport Central Catholic High School in 1947.
In 1955, he became the defender of the bond with the diocese marriage tribunal and the chaplain at the Sisters of Notre Dame convent in Park Hills.
He was named chancellor of the Diocese of Covington in 1960, and later director of the Diocese of Covington Family Life office.
In 1966, he became the pastor of Mother of God Church, and served in that capacity for 16 years.
He left Mother of God to become the chaplain for the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker in Walton in 1982, and retired in 1996.
"Everybody thought a lot of his leadership, " said Mrs. Hickey. "He worked very hard at everything he did."
Monsignor Hickey was an opera lover, with a large collection of opera recordings.
