Food store owner Hubert Otten; 'he loved meeting the public'
When Hubert Otten owned a food store in Covington, he made it a point to keep his customers at ease with a dose of good humor.
"He loved meeting the public and dealing with people, " said his son, John Otten of Fort Wright. "He was always willing to share a joke and make people smile. He would kid and cut up. That's what those small businesses were built on. He saw his role half the time as entertainer."

When owner Elmer Flick moved his store to Boone County in the mid-1960s, Mr. Otten bought the Covington store.
Mr. Otten developed enduring relationships with his customers, who often became friends, his son said. "He was a real master at being a friend and relating to other people."
Mr. Otten sold the store about 1979, but continued working part time as a meat cutter for for his old friend, Elmer Flick, in Hebron. He continued working until he was 83. He and his wife, Ruth, lived in Villa Hills, where Mr. Otten enjoyed gardening, growing tomatoes and flowers.
