Charles Tungate, 77, helped those in need
Charles Wilbur Tungate, 77, of Walton, who was awarded the Silver Star during World War II and came home to get involved in community charity work, died Friday at Florence Park Care Center.
"He was very well known throughout the community and enjoyed helping people who were in need, " said Mr. Tungate's son, Larry, of Independence.
During World War II, Mr. Tungate was a machine gunner with the U.S. Army's 44th Infantry Division and saw action in France and Italy. He participated in the Battle of Anzio.
During the war he helped guard several generals, including Gen. Dwight Eisenhower for 30 days in France.
"He was proud to have served in World War II and, after the war, veterans' organizations became a important part of his life, " his son said.
Mr. Tungate was a former commander of American Legion Post No. 277 and a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere.
He also was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 719 in Walton.
He was past president of the Good Guys Club, which seeks financial and food donations for the needy, especially around Christmas time.
He was a retired machinist with Ford Motor Co.
In addition to his son, other survivors include his wife, Geneva Winkle Tungate; daughters, Lynda Goodridge of Elsmere and Brenda Bayes of Lyons, Ore.; sons, Steve Tungate of Walton, Bill Tungate and Gary Tungate, both of Cincinnati, and Charlie Tungate of Erlanger; sisters, Faye Smith of Crittenden and Dorothy Yancey of Florence; brothers, Bill Tungate and John Tungate, both of Florida, Tommy Tungate of Alabama, Owen Tungate of Indiana and Harry Tungate of Arizona; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Good Guys Club, in care of Larry Kerns, Treasurer, 32 Catalina Drive, Walton, Ky. 41094.
Caroline M. Anderson, 84, of Newport, died at midnight Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a self-employed musician and a member of the Hilltoppers senior group in Newport. Her husband, Earl Anderson, died in 1971. A daughter, Marilyn Stortz, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Janis Yelton of Villa Hills and Cynthia Sohnlein of Dayton; sons, Jack Anderson of Cincinnati and Thomas Anderson of Newport; a brother, James Beck of Cincinnati; a sister, Rose Grassinger of Florida; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Betty Jane Otten Barrow, 81, of Newport, died at 6:10 p.m. Thursday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. She was a retired bookkeeper with J. C. Penney Co., Newport, and a former clerk with the Newport Police Department. Her husband, Allen P. Barrow, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Lawrence A. Barrow of Crestview, Timothy P. Barrow of Alexandria and Ronald J. Barrow of Cold Spring; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Edith Louise Beach, 56, of Dry Ridge, died Friday in Dry Ridge of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was a homemaker and a member of Elliston Baptist Church. A son, Timothy King, and daughter, Donna Sue King, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Lindell Isaac Beach; sons, Lonnie King of Williamstown and Mark King of Owenton; brothers, Charlie "Mike" Webster of Jonesville and Thomas S. Webster of Owenton; a sister, DeEtta McCormick of Ghent; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Burial will be in Old Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Elliston Baptist Church, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.
Robert J. Floyd, 73, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a retired engineer with Cincinnati Gas & Elec tric. His wife, Carolyn Floyd, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, Greg Floyd of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Deni Quinlan of Burlington and Terri Wettle of Lexington, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Whitaker of Strawberry Plains, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

John "Jack" Frischholz, 67, of Southgate, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired dock worker with Roadway Express, a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100 in Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. A son, Johnny Frischholz, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Frischholz; a son, Jeffrey Frischholz of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Christy Stevens of Bellevue; stepdaughters, Nancy Bailey of Alexandria and Karen Weddle of Florence; sisters, Myrna Frischholz of Bellevue and Elaine Schewe of Park Hills; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Walter Richard Gruner, 86, of Morning View, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired bar and apartment owner, a former employee of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, and an Army veteran. His wife, Edna Bruner; his son, Richard Gruner; and daughter, Sherri Gruner Lee, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Christian Thomas Hacker, son of Chris and Jennifer Hacker of Covington, was stillborn Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include grandparents, Dennis and Joan Hacker of Independence, Kathy Solter of Flemingsburg and Tom Woods of Farmers; and great-grandparents, George and Irene Edmondson of Fort Wright, Irene Hafner of Latonia and Juanita Miller of El Dorado, Ark.
Services were this morning at Newport Covenant Christian Church. Burial will be in Woods Family Cemetery, Farmers. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Hugh Latimer Head Jr., 83, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at his home. He was a retired stock broker with Hilliard Lyons Co. and Harrison & Co., Cincinnati, a former director of Fort Thomas Bellevue Bank, a member of the board of directors of Highland Country Club, a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fort Thomas, the Fort Thomas Lions Club and the University Club, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Head; a daughter, Amy Fennell of Fort Thomas; sons, James Head of California, William Head of Fort Thomas and Hugh L. Head III of Brentwood, Tenn.; a sister, Jane Becker of Fort Thomas; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Eugene Jamell, 76, of Fort Thomas, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired machinist with Duro Bag Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jamell; a son, Dennis L. Jamell of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Sharon Vickers of Cincinnati; a sister, Norma Scales of Indianapolis; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Marie Kells, 62, of Williamstown, died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a retired presser with Baylis Brothers, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Lewis; a daughter, Dianna Webster of Williamstown; sons, Edward W. Lewis of Southgate and Jeffery Allen Kells of Butler; brothers, Bennie Kells of Warsaw, William C. Kells of Independence and Sam Bailey of Williamstown; and six grandchildren.

Martin Lowe Sr., 69, of Maysville, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a supervisor with Brownings EPT in Maysville, a farmer and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Lowe; sons, Martin Lowe Jr. of Lewisburg and John Lowe of Mason County; a daughter, Pam Lowe, at home; a sister, Elizabeth Mers of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Virginia Louise Burger Meiner, 86, of Newport, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Joseph Franklin Meiner, died in 1985.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Meiner of Newport and Delarita Keller of Alexandria; sons, Samuel Franklin Meiner of Bellevue and Bill Meiner of St. Louis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

George W. Nelsen, 76, of Covington, died Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired masseur with the Cincinnati Athletic Club and Covington YMCA, and was a member of St. Anthony Church in Taylor Mill and the Knights of Columbus.

James Robert Pope, 68, of Florence, died Sunday at Villa Springs Care Center, Erlanger. He was an operations superintendent with Cinergy's East Bend Station, and a member of American Legion Post No. 410, Cincinnati, Florence Lodge No. 949 F&AM and the Scottish Rite, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Cable Pope; a son, Robert A. Pope of Villa Hills; his mother, Marian Pope of Florence; and a sister, Judy Thompson of Henderson.

Raymond Joseph Suttmiller, 92, of Covington, died at 8:03 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights. He was a retired accountant, a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Amanda Nicole Walker, 16, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Harrison County Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana, from in juries suffered in a farming accident. She was a junior at Harrison County High School and a member of Cynthiana Baptist Church.
Survivors include her parents, James David and Debbie Suddarth Walker of Cynthiana; brothers, Peter Glen Bilbrey of Georgetown and Jason Dewayne Walker of Cynthiana; grandmother, Lottie Lee Walker of Franklin; and her fiance, Brandon Bills of Harrison County.

Grace G. Ware, 90, of Covington, died at 1:18 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired credit department worker with Cincinnati Gas & Electric, and a member of Latonia Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a nephew, Tom Ware of Villa Hills.

Loretta B. Dedden Zembrodt, 96, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William E. Zembrodt, died in 1991. A son, Paul Zembrodt, died in 1980.
Survivors include sons, William J. Zembrodt of Taylor Mill and Larry Zembrodt of Villa Hills; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
