Frederic Ziv, teacher, broadcasting pioneer
From a four-story office building on Madison Road in Cincinnati, Frederic W. Ziv changed the way the Hollywood television industry did business.
Mr. Ziv, often called the father of syndicated television, died Saturday at his Hyde Park home. He was 96.
The 1950s TV pioneer is credited with developing such shows as "The Fugitive, " "Highway Patrol, " "Sea Hunt, " "The Cisco Kid" and "Bat Masterson." Actors Lloyd Bridges, Clint Eastwood, James Garner and Mary Tyler Moore, among others, got their first big breaks from Ziv productions.
Mr. Ziv created the syndicated market where most TV shows now make their biggest profits as a way to make network shows affordable to small advertisers by spreading the cost across TV markets.
Mr. Ziv grew up in Avondale, earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan and returned to Cincinnati to work for an advertising agency at the height of the Depression.
He developed a slogan, "The Freshest Thing in Town, " to promote the Rubel's bakery on radio, created a cartoon character and hooked up the campaign with bakeries across the Midwest to sponsor syndicated radio shows.
With his radio background, Mr. Ziv was one of the first to jump into TV production in the 1940s when many in advertising weren't sure about the new medium. By the end of the 1950s, Mr. Ziv had the largest privately owned TV production firm in Hollywood, credited with developing more than 80 programs.
By 1960, Mr. Ziv sold his company to United Artists.
He served on numerous art boards and taught for 22 years at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
In 1988, CCM established the Frederic W. Ziv Award to honor outstanding broadcasting graduates.
In his later years, Mr. Ziv became disillusioned with television. "The sad thing about television is that it had such gigantic possibilities, " he told The Post in 1999.
Survivors include his son, William Ziv, of Cincinnati; a daughter, Frederica Yamin of Montecito, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
