William Vogt, 62, sports enthusiast
William Vogt couldn't stand being idle. So he immersed himself in sports-related activities, work and family.
"He was umpiring, coaching, working two jobs, " said his son, Bill, of Erlanger. "He could do anything. He was always there if somebody needed him."
Mr. Vogt, 62, a baseball enthusiast and owner of Emerald Chili in Dayton and Bellevue, died Friday at his Southgate home.
He worked as a supervisor for the Pepsi-Cola Co. early in his career and worked as beverage sales representative with Snodgrass beer distributors, Norky Distributors and Z&S; Distributors.
He considered becoming a priest as a young man and raised his family with strong religious values, said his son.
"Church was a big part of our lives, " said Bill Vogt. So was sports. Mr. Vogt played baseball and later softball for the St. Bernard Holy Name Society, Griffin Industries, State Bank and Loyal Cafe teams. He was an umpire in men's softball.
He coached the Newport Catholic High School junior varsity team in 1981 and 1982, winning one regional championship.
In the mid-1960s, Mr. Vogt and his wife, Ruth, bought a chili parlor in Dayton and named it Emerald Chili. They later opened a second outlet in Bellevue, and the restaurants became a family endeavor.
"He wasn't afraid to take a chance, " said Ruth Vogt.
The couple were always on the go - working, attending children's sports events, taking weekend trips with friends, their son said.
Bill Vogt remembers that when he played football at Morehead University, his parents were his biggest fans: "Mom and Dad never missed any of my games. They would get in the van and drive 1, 000 miles to a game. When I played, I knew my mom and dad were there."
About four years ago, Mr. Vogt was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, which robbed him of his mobility. But he remained active in his family's lives.
"He used to be able to come over and help me if I had a project. When he couldn't do that, I picked his brain. How should I do this? He always came up with an answer or a thought that I never thought of. He knew how to put bushes in, take a wall down. He was a wonderful father, " Bill Vogt said.
