'Sherman' Griffin Yates, matriarch of large family

Mary "Sherman" Griffin Yates, 89, of Villa Hills, valued family ties. She was the matriarch of a family with five generations.

Mrs. Yates died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

"The family was a big part of her life, especially the children, " said her daughter, Mary James Streutker of Villa Hills.

Mrs. Yates was co-founder of Industrial Movers Inc., a business she started in the 1960s with her second husband, Gordon Yates, who died in 1999. Her first husband, Cecil Griffin, died in 1957. Mrs. Yates handled the office work of the business and remained an active partner in the business even in recent years.

"She was a very alive person, " said her daughter. "She was in general a take-charge kind of person. She said something, and my kids knew she meant business."

Other survivors include a stepson, James Yates of Hebron; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Leona F. Beck, 88, of Southgate, died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Walter J. Beck, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons, W. Joseph Beck of Alexandria and Donald Beck of Edgewood; a daughter, Shirley Beck Hoffman of Cincinnati; a sister, Julia Smalley of Highland Heights; eight grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075 or to St. Jude Mission Fund, c/o Msgr. Ralph W. Beiting, Route 5, Louisa, Ky. 41230.

Robert Bolmer, 69, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati.

He was a retired mail sorter with the U.S. Postal Service, Cincinnati. A son, Bobby Bolmer, died in 1968.

Survivors include his wife, Bette Bolmer; a son, David Bolmer of Latonia; a daughter, Barbara Price of Bellevue; and a brother, William Bolmer of Newport.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ, Park Ave. and Nelson, Newport, Ky. 41071.

Willian R. "Dickie" Duvall, 64, of Worthville, died Monday at his home.

He was a farmer and a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church and the Owen County ASCS office.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Greene Duvall; a son, Richard Duvall of Wheatley; a daughter, Regina Cook of Wheatley; and sisters, Martha Jane Perry of Fairfield, Ohio, and Vivian Carol "Cookie" Malcomb of Wheatley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wheatley Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Dallasburg Baptist Church Museum Fund, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Virgil Calvin Gentry Jr., 45, of Independence, died at 8:07 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights.

He was a disabled bricklayer for Miter Masonary Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Pam Gentry; a son, Jason Gentry of Independence; a daughter, Jodi Gentry of Independence; his mother, Cora Hastings of Cincinnati; brothers, James Gentry and Charles Gentry, both of Cincinnati; and sisters, Dottie Davis of Verona, Cora Mardis of Erlanger and Debbie Damron of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Mildred L. Kappes, 66, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a waitress. A son, Dennis Kappes, died in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, William Kappes; sons, James Garrison of Dayton and William Kappes Jr. of Southgate; daughters, Susan Rummel of Florence and Sherry Watson of Hamersville, Ohio; a brother, James Kaylor of Batavia, Ohio; a sister, Dolly Williams of Bethel, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

John L. Kruetzkamp, 92, of Fort Wright, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.

He was a retired president of Liebel-Flarsheim Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. He was a former Fort Mitchell City Councilman, member of Catholic Order of Foresters and a past president of Fort Mitchell Senior Citizens. His wife, Evangeline Kruetzkamp, died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, John W. Kruetzkamp of Liberty, Ind.; a daughter, Marilyn A. Cahill of Crestview Hills; a sister, Angela Lange of Fort Mitchell; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Curtis C. Madison, 88, of Covington, died Oct. 18 at his home.

He was an ordained minister and an employee of Moshel and Edward Machine Shop. He was a musician and poet, and a volunteer with Northern Kentucky Community Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include a nephew, William J. Madison III.

Services were this morning at First Baptist Church, 120 E. Ninth St., Covington. Burial was in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Renfro & Piper Funeral Home, Cincinnati, handled arrangements.

Rosemary Springelmeyer Matz, 80, of Villa Hills, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Her husband, William J. Matz, died in 1987.

Survivors include daughters, Joyce Ittig and Linda Matz, both of Villa Hills; sons, John Matz of Independence and Joe Matz of Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters, Dolores Thompson of Fort Wright and Lucille Walerius of Villa Hills; and three granddaughters.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Louise Armstrong Reece, 75, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at her home.

She was a retired supervisor with R.L. Polk Co. and a member of Northern Kentucky Church of Christ. She was a member of the Erlanger Senior Citizens Club and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Her husband, Hiram Reece, died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Reece of Erlanger; and a son, Roy Reece of Florence.

Services will be at noon Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Violet D. Rentas, 88, of Florence, died Tuesday at Villa Spring Health Care Center, Erlanger.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Williamstown Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Gordon Anderson of Florence; daughters, Joyce Garrett of Holden, W.Va., Shirley Mutters of Florence and Judy Piecuch of Michigan; a sister, Gladys Jones of West Virginia; brothers, Ferrel Reeves and Wandall Reeves, both of Florence; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Camp Nelson Cemetery, Nicholsville. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Zadoc "Doc" Sorrells, 92, of Newport, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired engineer with the federal government, a member of Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge No. 607 F&AM in Dayton and a Merchant Ma rine veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Sullonder of Newport; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Persimmon Grove Cemetery.

Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

Lelia Mae Swart, 84, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Crescent Springs, died Monday at Chittenham Johnson Willis Hospital in Richmond.

She was a homemaker and a member of Garrard Street Church of Christ, Covington. Her husband, Everett Swart, died in 1978.

Survivors include a son, David Swart of Latonia; a daughter, Mary Pellegrino of Midlothian, Va.; brothers, Fred Pugh of Edgewood, Wallace Pugh, Adrian Pugh, Odi Pugh and Bill Pugh, all of Falmouth; sisters, Betty Wolfe of Clermont County, Ohio, Margie Brown of Tampa, Fla., and Caroline Walthars of Falmouth; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Joyce B. Vaughan, 65, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired employee of AT&T; and a member of Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Thomas D. Vaughn, died in 1998.

Survivors include sisters, Helen D. Johnson of Las Vegas, Norma Turner of Jackson, Shirley Faehr of Morning View and Janice C. Minnich of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Ernest "Zeke" Zimmer, 81, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was owner of Specialty Appraisal Co., and a member of Campbell County Foresters, Jaycees and the Sorin Society at the University of Notre Dame. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Henzerling Zimmer; a son, Tim Zimmer of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Terry Wallace of Somerset; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
