Edward Huff Jr., reveled in teaching scuba diving
Edward L. Huff Jr. loved scuba diving so much that he owned or operated a series of diving businesses for some 25 years, reveling in teaching other people the joy of underwater adventure.
When his students were certified, Mr. Huff, who owned the Hammerhead Scuba School in Alexandria, often took them on diving trips to Florida and North Carolina.
One such student called Mr. Huff's family to offer condolences after learning his former teacher, 54, was in critical condition following a fire at his Covington home Monday night. Mr. Huff died of smoke inhalation Wednesday afternoon at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
The student "was so upset. He just kept going on and on about how much fun it had been learning to dive this summer and that he was looking forward to future diving expeditions, " said Megan Downing of Falmouth, one of Mr. Huff's sisters.
Mr. Huff was an Army Green Beret during the Vietnam War and took up scuba diving when he was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.
He went on to own or manage diving schools in North Carolina and in Oxnard, Calif., where he also bought a boat for commercial trips before moving back to Kentucky.
He worked about 10 years as a machine operator and then in quality control at Anchor Flange, a casting company in Boone County. Then, even though he was nearing retirement age, Mr. Huff withdrew his savings and opened Hammerhead Scuba School in April. There, he also sold scuba, boating, hunting, fishing and archery supplies.
"He always wanted to get back in the business, " said Mrs. Downing. "He was doing what he always wanted to do." Mrs. Downing said her brother also loved to fish.
"He was an avid outdoorsman, " she said. "His grandkids and his daughters and his fishing, if he had those three things, he was really happy."
A longtime fishing buddy, Pastor Gary Wilson of the Fairlane Baptist Church in Grants Lick, will officiate at services with Tom Ison, the pastor of Mr. Huff's church, the True Vine Fellowship Church in Independence.
