Gilbert Warren Damon: 'He was still smiling'
Gilbert W arren Damon's trademark was his smile. Even in the worst of times, he wore a smile.
"He never complained, " said Tina Allen of Covington, the eighth of his 14 children.
"It was something people always noticed about him. You hardly ever saw him when he wasn't smiling. He was still smiling two days ago when he lost consciousness."
Mr. Damon, 75, died at his home in Morning View Friday after a five-year battle with cancer. His wife, Tina, died 15 years ago.
Mr. Damon came home to Morning View after serving with the Army in World War II and took over a small grocery store in Whites Tower, which he operated for 25 years. After that, he worked at a variety of jobs, from selling furniture to selling insurance to selling meat from a truck.
Ms. Allen recalled that her father sometimes had difficulty making ends meet.
"We never knew we had money problems, " she said. "Mom would get upset when a bill collector would call or maybe the electric would go out. But looking back, he seemed to go out of his way to dispel any fears us kids might have had.
"It was the example he set for all of us. I learned that no matter how hard times might get, you should always hold your chin high."
Mr. Damon was a member of St. Cecilia Church in Independence and an avid gardener. "The only thing we didn't grow in his garden was meat, " his daughter said.
"After working all day long, he'd come home and work in that garden. And every Sunday, he'd have all us kids working in it, too. I put up a fuss about it then. But I'm glad I did it now. "
