John Feilen, 70, loved children, athletics
John Feilen spent much of his lifetime driven to succeed at work and in sports, then in retirement used that energy to become one of the top athletic boosters in Fort Thomas.
Mr. Feilen, 70, of Fort Thomas, died Monday of cancer at the Highlands of Fort Thomas, a nursing home.
He had said many times that a love for his family and the Lord were the guiding lights of his life. In April, he and his wife, Louise, marked their 49th anniversary. Mr. Feilen was a member of the Love and Faith Fellowship Church in Newport for seven years. Prior to that, he was a member at the Christian Tabernacle Church in Newport for 40 years and served for many years as its Sunday School secretary.
"John became involved in the Sunday School program because he loved children, and they loved him, " his wife said. "When he became sick, the children at the church were always asking for him."
Born in Newport, Mr. Feilen attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School. He began playing baseball his favorite sport as a school boy and later became an elite softball player in Greater Cincinnati. He was a third baseman and pitcher for several area championship teams.
That passion for baseball and softball later led Mr. Feilen to become a coach for girls softball teams in Fort Thomas, said Joni Buten, one of his daughters. He also was an assistant coach for The Kentucky Post co-ed softball team in the 1980s.
Mr. Feilen worked for 40 years for M. Rosenthal Printers in Cincinnati and later started his own company - Feilen Same Day Services Courier Co. He served in the Navy on the USS Palau, an aircraft carrier, during the Korean War.
After the war, Feilen joined the James Wallace Costigan American Legion Post No. 11 in Newport, where his father, Peter, had been a commander. A fellow member, Tony Bardo, said Mr. Feilen dedicated himself to the organization for decades.
"We grew up together in Newport, graduated from the same school, then became members at the post here. I have many fond memories of 'Hans' (a nickname). I always liked him because he was happy-go-lucky."
Mr. Feilen was a strong supporter of Highlands High School's sports programs. For decades, he was a fixture at the school's baseball and football games.
"He was heartening to the ball players because he went to every home game and most away games, " said Gary Schrader, head baseball coach and assistant football coach at the school.
"We could always look up and see him there, sitting in the same spot by third base. Even at football games, he would stand by the locker room door and cheer the players as they came out.
"It was great to see someone so excited about young people."
In addition to Mr. Feilen's wife and daughter, survivors include another daughter, Patti Buchanan of Cold Spring; sisters, Mary Charles of Herkimer, N.Y., and Pat Shields of Sayler Park, Ohio; a brother, Gayle Feilen of Southgate; four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Memorials may be made to the Love and Fellowship Church, 720 York St., Newport, or the charity of the donor's choice.
Trinett Foote, 47, artist, made mission of promoting diversity
Trinett Foote was an artist, a nurse and a self-appointed ambassador for cultural awareness.
She approached life with an exuberance that shined out of her paintings. She captured the joy and zest of everyday life in detailed depictions of people and cultures around the world. It was a zest she carried inside of her.
Ms. Foote, 47, of Fort Wright, died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday at Cincinnati Hospice in Blue Ash, Ohio.
She had been treated for ovarian cancer for the past four years, and doctors told her several times that she would be dead in months. She rallied, though, running in the New York Marathon and urging other cancer survivors to celebrate their lives and maintain their hope.
In a 1999 interview, she said, "People have to have a mission in life. My mission is promoting cultural diversity. When people don't know about something, they feel threatened by it. If I can inspire any kind of kindness, if I can give people a vision of possibilities, then I feel I have succeeded." Ms. Foote was a traveling nurse for several years, teaching and training in hospitals and clinics in remote villages around the world. She chronicled her travels in paintings.
With her trademark sense of whimsy, she often included her terrier, Trinney, and herself in the paintings. Her battle with cancer inspired her painting of the New York Marathon, which ended up on display at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Her paintings and prints have been displayed in Paris, Switzerland, Japan, France, Sweden, California and New York.
"Trinett enjoyed life so much. She loved the outdoors, " said her mother, Gloria Foote of Fort Wright. "She was so sick, but she never gave up."
