Carolyn Herbst, retired postmaster
Carolyn Rose Herbst was postmaster in Cold Spring and an assistant postmaster in Newport.
The Highland Heights woman doted on a raft of young relatives and loved working with youths as a 4-H leader in Campbell County.
"She definitely was a people person and very gregarious, " said a sister-in-law, Rae Herbst of Cincinnati.
Carol Herbst died Thursday morning at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was 80.
Ms. Herbst grew up on a 54-acre farm in what was rural Campbell County and now is a portion of Interstate 275 and the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights. "She had five brothers, and she used to keep us all in line, " said Leroy Herbst, a brother, and the husband of Rae Herbst.
Carolyn Herbst worked more than three decades for the U.S. Postal Service, advancing from clerk to management.
She regularly attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in Alexandria and was a former treasurer of John's Hill cemetery in Highland Heights.
For years she lived with and cared for a brother, William, who died in 1992.
Besides Leroy Herbst, survivors include brothers, George Robert Herbst of Richmond and Leslie Herbst of Butler.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in John's Hill cemetery in Highland Heights.

John Paul Durkan, 84, of Springfield, Mass., died Wednesday at his son's home in Cynthiana. He was a retired assistant postmaster in Springfield and an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Mary Frances Smith Durkan, and second wife, Anne Steele Durkan, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Patrick J. Durkan of Easton, Mass., and Jack J. Durkan of Cynthiana; a sister, Jane A. Durkan of Agawam, Mass; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at North/Meadlowlawn cemetery in New Port Richey, Fla. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 506 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031. Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is handling local arrangements.
Barry R. Fields, 52, of Williamstown, died Thursday at his home. He was a maintenance worker with Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, a member of Clarks Creek Baptist Church, Dry Ridge, and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a former basketball coach at Dry Ridge Elementary School.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Fields; sons, Roger Fields of Williamstown, Barry Fields Jr. of Dry Ridge and Harry Slone of El Paso, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Hurst of Dry Ridge; his mother and stepfather, Opal and Richard Courtney of Falmouth; brothers, David Fields of Atlanta and James Fields of Dry Ridge; a half-sister, Sharon Dean of Scottsboro, Ala.; stepbrothers, Rick Courtney of Louisville, Donnie Hartman of Fort Payne, Ala., and Terry Hartman of Atlanta; a stepsister, Marlene Baker of Erlanger; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Bertha Winkle Harper, 84, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati. She was a retired restaurant worker for P&G; Restaurant, The Purple Cow, Old Fountain Square Hotel and Kay Cafeteria in Cincinnati, and was a member of Glad Tidings Church, Bellevue. Her husband, Robert Harper, died July 2.
Survivors include a son, Joe Bishop Jr. of Cincinnati; a brother, George Winkle of Butler; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County.
Jack Kennedy, 57, of Fort Wright, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Jim Marsh, 54, of Florence, died Wednesday at his home. He was a purchasing agent with Metalex Manufacturing, Inc., a member of Big Bone Baptist Church in Boone County and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Wagner of Union; his mother, Thelma P. Marsh of Verona; brothers, Bill Marsh of Lady Lake, Fla., Curt Marsh of Florence, Gary Marsh and Ronnie Marsh, both of Verona; and sisters, Rita Doerr and Joy Owen, both of Verona.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
Ruth Amelia Poppe, 97, of Newport, died Saturday at Madeira Health Care Center, Cincinnati. She was an administrative assistant with Victoria Square Apartments in Cincinnati. Her husband, Raymond Poppe, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, James Poppe, Robert Poppe and Richard Poppe; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Myra Brown Sanders, 94, of War saw, died Wednesday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker and a member of Consolidated Second Baptist Church, Warsaw.
Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Brightwell, Sally Richards, Lana Webb, Retha Webb and Patricia Owen, all of Warsaw, and Mary Frances Warner of Cincinnati; a son, Claude Sanders of Carrollton; a stepson, James Sanders of New Liberty; a stepdaughter, Hattie Hill of New Liberty; brothers, William Brown of Warsaw, Rev. Harry Brown and Vernon Brown, both of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Clyde Schalck, 87, of Erlanger, formerly of Grants Lick, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Herschel Ray Walters, 63, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired truck driver with Sorg Paper Co. in Middletown, Ohio, a member of Alexandria VFW Post. He was a former member of the Army National Guard and attended Calvary Assembly of God, Cynthiana.
Survivors include his wife, Annah L. Walters; sons, Terry A. Walters of Middletown, Lloyd M. Walters of Jacksonville, Fla., Elden R. Walters of Madison County and George Ray Walters of Harrison county; a daughter, Diana L. Thomas of LaPorte, Ind.; brothers, Rev. William Walters of Napoleon, Ohio, Wallace T. Walters of Franklin, Ohio, and Gary L. Walters of Middletown; sisters, Wilma Pennington and Lois A. Keith, both of Franklin, Ohio; and 17 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Plant City, Fla.
