Jasper 'Jay' Creekmore, 81, the Ludlow 'Can Man'
Jasper C. "Jay" Creekmore, woodworker, welder and longtime Ludlow resident, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday at the home of his daughter, Jerlene Smith in Delhi Township, Ohio. He was 81.
Mr. Creekmore was a member of the Woodcarvers Association, the Ludlow Veterans and the First Baptist Church of Ludlow.
But more Ludlow residents recognized him as the tall, thin man who gathered cans and greeted residents along the streets of the city. In a story in The Kentucky Post in May, Police Lt. Col. Benny Johnson called Mr. Creekmore "an extra set of eyes for the police department." Storekeeper Jim Hater talked about his generous spirit and called him "part of Ludlow." Mr. Creekmore and his wife, Alma, raised their three children in Ludlow. He worked for the Southern Railroad and later was a welder for Ortner Freight for close to 25 years.
"He was a wonderful father, " said his daughter, Jerlene Smith of Cincinnati, adding he was a loving person, quiet and unassuming.
"He would do anything for you. When I was a teen and didn't drive, I liked to go to the skating rink. After working all day, he'd get in the car and get a bunch of us teen-agers and take us out and come back to get us."
He taught his children how to fish. He enjoyed woodcarving and would present hand-carved owls and turtles to family and friends. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in July.
