Joseph A. Boone Sr., Ludlow city attorney and prosecutor
Joseph A. Boone Sr. never lost an argument, as far as he was concerned.
"Some of his best friends leaned to the left, and he loved to talk and argue with them, " said his son, Joseph Boone Jr. of Ludlow.
"Sometimes he would win the debate. The rest of the time they would agree to disagree."
Although Mr. Boone was a registered Democrat, he was a staunch conservative who loved sparring with friend and foe alike over politics, his son said.
Mr. Boone, 86, of Ludlow, died at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at his home of 51 years. The father of nine children and World War II Army veteran practiced law in Northern Kentucky for nearly 50 years, serving as Ludlow city attorney and prosecutor for 17 years.
Mr. Boone attended Covington Latin School, Xavier University and Chase Law School. He was assistant to Bishop Howard of the Diocese of Covington for 13 years and was the first editor of the Messenger Catholic newspaper.
"He was a deeply religious and highly moral man, very dedicated to his family, " said Kenton District Judge Martin Sheehan, a longtime friend of Mr. Boone.
Sheehan said his father, Gus, and Mr. Boone were a team in Ludlow Police Court for years.
"Dad would defend them, and Joe would prosecute, " Sheehan said. "Then, when they got finished, they'd go out and have a beer together."
Mr. Boone later developed a reputation as a skilled real estate lawyer, "the best title man in the area, " Sheehan said.
"When the records were computerized, he preferred to continue to do it by hand. He typed up his titles on an old Underwood he kept." Mr. Boone was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky Right to Life and Catholics United for the Faith. He was a member of the Covington Catholic High School board and organized the Municipal League of Kentucky.
During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps, both in the Philippines and occupied Japan.
