Carl Louis Black, 62, nursing home nurse
Carl Louis Black, 62, of Berry, a nurse who took care of elderly nursing home patients, died Monday of cancer.
In recent years, he worked at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler and at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown.
"His patients loved him because he gave them a tremendous amount of love and tender care above and beyond the point of nursing, " said his wife of 36 years, Nevelyn Bush Black.
She said her husband tried to make up for children who put their parents in nursing homes, but didn't visit them very often.
"He would take the time to sit and talk with his patients, " said Mrs. Black. "He was their friend as well as nurse.
"He loved being with these people and they loved him back. They really cared for each other."
Mr. Black won the James D. Patton Award in 1988 for his dedication to nursing and his patients.
Earlier in his life, Mr. Black was a member of the Eastern Campbell County Fire Department and served as one of the department's first emergency medical technicians.
Mr. Black's hobby was raising and riding horses. He and his family had about 30 horses and ponies on their farm.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include a son, Curtis Troy Black of Berry; a daughter, Carla Maines of California; sisters Betty Jean Bowcock of Nancy, Ann Tribbey of Rising Sun, Ind., and Mary Lee Shrewsbury of Covel, W. Va., and two grandchildren.
Visitation is from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Cooper Funeral Home in Grants Lick. Funeral service follows at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
Sanford Lee "Sandy" Arvin, 82, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired assembly worker with General Motors Corp. in Dayton, Ohio, a member of Carrollton Lodge No. 134 F&AM and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sisters, Elizabeth Meade of Indianapolis, Sylvia "Betty" Breeck of Carrollton, Margaret "Nellie" Salyers of Frankfort and Norma Greene of Bedford.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Dolores M. Hahn, 79, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:57 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker, a member of Brighton Center Travel Club and a volunteer with the Brighton Center, Newport. A son, Gregory Hahn, died in 1996.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond J. Hahn; daughters, Arlene Hawes of Alexandria and Regina Eckert of Cincinnati; a son, Robin Hahn of Cold Spring; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Heinrich G. "Henry" Kraeling, 70, of Fort Wright, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a brick layer with Bricklayers Union Local No. 2 and a member of the Kolping Society, Cincinnati
Survivors include his wife, Margot Geier Kraeling; a daughter, Barbara Rauen of Crestview Hills; sons, Dr. Stephan Kraeling of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Gunther M. Kraeling of Lexington; brothers, Dr. William Kraeling of Cincinnati, Josef Kraeling, Hans Kraeling and Friedel Kraeling, all of Germany; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 tonight at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Lucretia Alexander Mefford, 76, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Norton's Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church. Her husband, Joseph "J. S." Mefford, died in 1999.
Survivors include sons, Ricky Mefford of Carrollton and Gary Mefford of Ramsey, Minn.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Madison, Ind.
Colette G. Powell, 95, of Norwood, Ohio, formerly of Newport, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Cincinnati Dental Society Auxiliary, Beaux and Belles and Revelers social clubs. Her husband, Dr. William T. Powell, and a daughter, Mary M. Powell, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Thomas E. Powell of Norwood, Ohio, and James P. Powell of Southgate; a daughter, Patricia A. Johannigman of Cincinnati; a sister, Hyacinth McGarvey of Fort Thomas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church, Norwood. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Carroll "Dino" Sarbeck, 54, of Dayton, died Aug. 6 while visiting family in Riverside, Calif. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Edward Boers Post No. 153, the Bellevue-Dayton American Legion and a former member of Buccaneers Junior Drum and Bugle Corps of VFW POst No. 2899, Dayton.
Survivors include a daughter, Christy; a son, Tommy; sister, Betty Bravard; and brothers, Donald Sarbeck, James Sarbeck and Paul Sarbeck, all of the state of California.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Erlanger Church of Christ. Burial was in Riverside, Calif., National cemetery on Aug. 11. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; or the church or charity of the donor's choice.
Linda Grant Smith, 53, of Brandon, Fla., formerly of Walton, died Monday in Sarasota, Fla.

Mary Ellen Smith, 80, of Covington, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Percy Smith, died in 1992.
Survivors include a brother, Ozell Manogin of Jackson, Miss.; and sisters, Emma Hollis of Covington and Anne Marie Manogin of Marshall, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at J&M; Funeral Home, Mendenhall, Miss.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery, Pinola, Miss. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling local arrangements.
William J. Smith, 69, of Cincinnati, died Sept. 6 at Mercy South Hospital in Cincinnati. He was an automotive machinist.
Survivors include sons, Gregory G. Warren of Cincinnati, Eric Smith and Larry Tolliver, both of Los Angeles; daughters, Vanetta Tolliver of Cincinnati and Verna McKinney of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Napolean Smith of Covington; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Covington. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mary Smith Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
