Charles Robert Lemmons, Covington police officer

Much to the pleasure of Covington residents, Charles Robert Lemmons didn't mind getting personal with people he met while working on his beat as a Covington police officer.

After taking a boy who got his hand caught in machinery to the hospital, Mr. Lemmons continued checking on the boy's condition for days until he was sure the youngster would be all right. Years later, Mr. Lemmons ran into the boy's parents, who thanked him for saving their son's life.

During his 36 years with the Covington police, Mr. Lemmons developed a tight bond with Covington's citizens.

"That's the part of the job he loved most, " said his son, Robert Joseph Lemmons of Cincinnati. "When he got the chance to help somebody, that's when he felt his best."

He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia, the Covington Retired Police Association, and Covington Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 1. His wife, Pauline Emma Lemmons, died in 1966.

While his job demanded assertiveness, Mr. Lemmons was easy-going and helpful around family and friends. When he retired from the police force in 1979, he kept busy doing odd jobs for people in his neighborhood. Mr. Lemmons also offered advise to the next generation of police officers.
