John Reagan Sr., 93, firefighting lieutenant
John A. Reagan Sr. joined the Covington Fire Department in January 1937. Days later, on Jan. 26, Greater Cincinnati suffered the worst flood in its history, destroying hundreds of homes, displacing thousands of residents, knocking out power and water.
"Johnny" Reagan never forgot the heroic and tragic events of those weeks, though he didn't share with family members some experiences still too painful to speak about 60 years later.
Lt. Reagan wasn't fully aware of the Sept. 11 tragedies in New York City and Washington, D.C., said his daughter, Diana Walker of Independence, which she took as a blessing.
"He'd be so proud of the firefighters and what they're doing, but the loss of life would've really hurt him in his heart, " she said. Lt. Reagan, Covington's oldest retired firefighter and the oldest member of St. John Church of Dover, Ind., died Sunday at Woodland Hills Care Center in Lawrenceburg, Ind. He was 93.
The first president of the Covington City Employees Credit Union and secretary of the Northern Kentucky Fireman's Association, Lt. Reagan was instrumental in winning improvements such as better scheduling and pension benefits for local firefighters, Ms. Walker said.
After leaving the fire department, he worked as a safety agent for the Kentucky Department of Public Safety, Division of Accident Control. He often spoke to the area high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving. Later, he was a paramutuel clerk at the Latonia and Keeneland race tracks.
His wife, Alera Draper Reagan, died in 1995. In addition to his daughter, Diana Lynn Walker of Independence, Lt. Reagan is survived by a son, John A. Reagan Jr. of San Diego; daughters Leah Woolwine of St. Leon, Ind., and Mary Jane Glenkler of Hebron; and 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
