Patricia Harger, filled with Christian charity
Patricia Lee Harger had a simple but sound reason for the Christian charity she showed during her lifetime.
She explained it to one of her daughters once after a man came to the door of their home in Grand Saline, Texas, asking for a drink of water from their hose.
Mrs. Harger invited the man in, fed him and sent him off with pears in his pockets from the family's tree. When her daughter asked her why, Mrs. Harger replied:
"That man could have been Jesus. If anybody comes to my door asking for something to drink or eat, I want to make sure I give it."
That was the sort of person her mother was, said Donna Jean Swenk of Florence, the daughter involved.
"If somebody came to her door and asked for something, if she had it, she gave it."
Mrs. Harger, a Florence homemaker, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was 60.
Diabetes and heart disease slowed Mrs. Harger the last 10 years, but never disrupted her relationship with God, her daughter said.
"No matter how sick she got, she had that strong faith, " Ms. Swenk said.
