Albert Stanley Rawe, 85, dedicated to community

Albert Stanley Rawe of Newport was one of the most civic-minded citizens in the city's history, taking leadership roles in numerous community service organizations.

"He used to say, 'While others were out playing golf, I was at some meeting, ' " said Mr. Rawe's son, Roger Rawe of Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Rawe, 85, a savings and loan executive, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati.

He was a former member of the board of directors of the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce, the Campbell County Boys Club and Lakeside Place Nursing Home, the Newport-Campbell County Planning and Zoning Commission, the Newport Board of Adjustment, Monmouth Street Merchants Association, Knights of Columbus No. 1301 and American Legion Post No. 11.

He was a past vice president of the Newport Citizens Advisory Committee, a former president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Men and Newport Campbell Deanery, and a former member of the Bishop's Lay Committee for Vocations.

"Civic involvement was his way of life, " said Roger Rawe. "He was a very religious person, and a lot of his motivation came from the Catholic tradition of getting involved and being conscientious.

"He felt it was his duty to carry on the things that needed to be carried on in society. He was very devoted to Newport. I don't think he ever could have moved away."

Mr. Rawe was a retired executive vice president and loan officer with Southgate Savings & Loan, a retired fiscal director for Campbell County Fiscal Court and a former director and executive vice president of Favorite Federal Savings & Loan Association.

He was a former secretary and treasurer for the Northern Kentucky League of Savings, Building and Loan Associations, and a former director of the Kentucky Building Savings and Loan League.

Mr. Rawe was a parish council and finance committee member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include his wife, Anna L. Rawe; daughters, Maureen "Mert" Birkenhauer of Fort Thomas, Roberta Dittoe of Fort Mitchell, Sharon Braun of Cold Spring, and Mary Ciafardini and Madonna Gish, both of Newport; sons, Albert Rawe Jr. of Cincinnati, Thomas Rawe of Bellevue, Timothy Rawe of Fort Thomas, Randy Rawe of Villa Hills, Ronald Rawe of Newport and Edward Rawe of Wilder; and 30 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Virginia "Missie" Mae Wachter Benedict, 30, of Augusta, died Tuesday in a traffic accident on Ky. 8. She was an employee of Meyer Tool.

Survivors include her son, Dalton James Benedict, at home; parents, Betty Ware Wachter and Larry "Skipper" Wachter, both of Augusta; and sisters, Jamie Wachter and Lisa Brimmer, both of Augusta.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Dalton Benedict Fund, C/O Bank of Germantown.

Wendell Joe Brewer, 47, of Morning View, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a machinist with Lunkenheimer Co., Cincinnati. A son, Wendell Joe Brewer Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Philip Long of Newport; a daughter, Debbie Long of Kenton County; brothers, Homer Brewer of Newport, Elwood Brewer of Glencoe, James Brewer of Troy, Idaho, Harry Brewer of Maysville, Jerry Brewer of Morning View, George Brewer, Tim Brewer and Ted Brewer, all of Demossville; and sisters, Linda Smith of Dry Ridge and Brenda Brown of Morning View.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at a son's home, Box 50, Rich Road, Morning View. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Clarence E. Caudill, 74, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired electrical engineer with Cincinnati Gas & Electric and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Caudill; daughters, Kim Roberts of Memphis, Tenn., Lisa Warner and Leslie Romito, both of Fort Thomas, and Allyson Matthews of Southgate; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075 or to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Ana Guadalupe Estrada, 41, of Elsmere, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a former clerk with the City of San Diego.

Survivors include sons, Uriel Sanchez and Adrian Sanchez, both of Elsmere; a daughter, Pearl Sanchez of Elsmere; her mother, Martha Estrada of Elsmere; a brother, Luis Estrada of Foley, Ala .; and sisters, Martha Mellado of San Diego and Maricela Victoria of Elsmere.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at TLC Cremation and Funeral Service, Covington. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

James Fritz, 84, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington.

He was a retired farmer and a deacon of the Unity Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie McCauley Fritz; sons, John C. Fritz of Lexington and Charles Thomas Fritz of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Charlotte Ann Pandolfo of New Port Richey, Fla.; a brother, Joe Fritz of Cynthiana; a sister, Mary Frances Florence of Cynthiana; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Michael D. Haggard, 38, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Sept. 20 at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Jamie Haggard; brothers, James Haggard and Darrell Haggard, both of Cincinnati; and a sister, Dana Clark of Cincinnati.

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere.

Jason P. Leinmiller, 22, of Covington, died at 4:03 a.m. Tuesday in Boone County.

He was a data transcriber with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington, and attended Madison Avenue Christian Church, Covington.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas A. and Mary E. Forrest Leinmiller of Covington; a brother, Andy Leinmiller of Covington; and grandfather, William J. Forrest of Covington.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Roger L. Osborne, 58, of Florence, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a corporate sales analyst with BASF in Clifton, N.J., and Superatech in Charlotte, N.C., a charter member of First Church of Christ in Burlington and a member of Florence Masonic Roger Lodge No. 949 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Osborne; sons, Christopher James Osborne and Patrick Sean Osborne, both of Florence; and a brother, David A. Osborne of Florence.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at First Church of Christ, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Mary C. Price, 93, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of Daughters of America, Florence. Her husband, William Price, died in 1983. A son, James Kenneth Price, died in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara J. Wilson of Florence; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Virginia Heringer Schwerling, 89, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Joseph F. Schwerling, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Brown of Hilliard, Ohio; a son, Joseph Schwerling of Fort Thomas; a brother, John "Jake" Heringer of Cold Spring; and one granddaughter.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church. Mrs. Schwerling bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Ralph L. Simpson, 73, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at his home.

He was a retired employee of General Electric, Cincinnati, and a deacon of Blanket Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County. He was a member of Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 10 9 and Woodmen of the World and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Morris Simpson; sons, Gary Simpson, Michael Simpson and Jeffrey Simpson, all of Falmouth; a brother, Edwin Jones of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Ronald J. Zembrodt, 68, of Warsaw, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a salesman with Delightful Days RV Center and a member of St. Joseph Church in Warsaw and International Order of Foresters, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Zembrodt; a son, Ronald R. Zembrodt of Union; daughters, Marilyn A. Fritsch of Georgetown, Jackie Duvall of Richwood and Anthony Zembrodt of Kenton Hills; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.
