Floyd Gatewood, 83, Grant County politician
For Floyd K. Gatewood, politics gave him an authority he both respected and used to help residents of Grant County. A staunch Democrat who knew Grant County politically and personally, Mr. Gatewood served two terms on the Grant County Fiscal Court.
For eight years, he traveled throughout the county talking to residents, making sure roads and buildings were up to speed, and looking for ways to improve the county.
"Some people are just made for politics, " said a daughter, Janet Gatewood of Mt. Zion. "He had a special gift for communicating with people. He really loved his job."

While quick to support and argue on behalf of his Democratic colleagues, Mr. Gatewood left family discipline up to his wife, Elsie Vest Gatewood. Janet Gatewood said her father worked tirelessly to support and spend time with his children and grandchildren.
"When he was in his 70s, I saw him ride a bike with his grandson, " she said. "I just thought that was the neatest thing."
