Bob Harper, had love for music
Bob Harper wasn't a musician, but he loved music - so much so that all three of his children pursued careers in it.
"It costs money to buy instruments and send children to lessons and music camps, but, whatever my father did, he wanted to do it to the fullest, and he encouraged that same drive in us, " said his son, Rob Harper of North College Hill, a music teacher.
Bob's son, David, of Savannah, Ga., is a music therapist, and his daughter, Carrie, of Lima, Ohio, will soon begin her own career as a music teacher.
Mr. Harper, of Corinth, died Wednesday night at St. Joseph Hospice in Lexington from complications due to stomach cancer. He was 58.
A quality control employee for Eagle Manufacturing in Florence, Mr. Harper had a gift for design and engineering, said Carrie Harper. In addition to tinkering at repairs around the house, he also tackled larger projects, such as designing an addition to the family home.
"He came up with the design for the addition on a napkin at dinner, " she said. "He showed it to a contractor and he said, 'Yeah, that would work.' "
"When he wasn't at work, he was at home at work, " said David Harper. "If it wasn't strong enough for an elephant to walk on, it wasn't good enough for dad."
Mr. Harper also designed the home's deck and a lake on the property, which he stocked with fish.
He was born in Lima and met his future wife, Lynnette Carey Harper, when she was a nurse-in-training at Lima Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harper was hospitalized while recovering from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
"They tell you you're not supposed to fall in love with your patients, but I did and it lasted 35 years, " she said.
