'Margie' Smith, 'second mother' to many kids
Margaret "Margie" Smith, 62, of Burlington, who made a spirited fight against cancer for 11 years, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of Christ in Burlington. "She always had a smile on her face even though she had cancer 11 years, " said Phyllis Knarr, Mrs. Smith's sister-in-law. "She was a very happy, very lovable person. "Everybody looked up to her because of her spirit. She kept up her spirit through prayer." Mrs. Smith was extremely popular with children in the community. "There w ere six or seven kids in the neighborhood who looked on her as their second mother, " said Mrs. Knarr. "She was great with children. "Kids always made her home their second home. One girl said that if it hadn't been for Margaret's home to come to, she wouldn't be here today." Mrs. Knarr said her sister-in-law also did other "remarkable" things. "She volunteered to help handicapped children on their school bus. She was just dearly loved by everybody." Mrs. Smith's favorite hobby was crafts and she was an expert quilt-maker. "She gave most of her quilts away, " said Mrs. Knarr. Survivors include her husband, Larry Smith; a daughter, Debbie Smith of Erlanger; a son, Richard Smith of Warsaw; and a sister, Donna Baker of Florence. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home in Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill.
Robert J. Baker, 77, of Covington, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was a case worker with the Kentucky Cabinet for Human Resources and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Baker of Casselberry, Fla.; sons, Bruce Baker of Cincinnati and Jeff Ba ker of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Julie Utke of Casselberry; sisters, Shirley Diaz of Sacramento, Calif., and Kay Broker of Irvine, Calif.; and a grandson.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Shonda J. Barton, 28, of Crittenden, died Monday at her home. She was a technician with Summit Medical Group in Williamstown and attended Wilmington Baptist Church, Fiskburg.
Survivors include her parents, Ray Burton Sr. and Bessie L. Barton Smith, both of Crittenden; brothers, A. Ray Barton Jr. of Crittenden and Tim Barton of Florence; a half-brother, Tony Barton of Cincinnati; a half-sister, Karen Carlton of Cincinnati; and grandmother, Freda Reynolds of Norwood, Ohio.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Bradford Cemetery, Gray.

Mary K. Broomall, 46, of Ashland, formerly of Covington, died at 7:35 a.m. Monday at her home.
She was a youth minister and church worker, and a member of Marshall Catholic Newman Center in Huntington, W.Va.
Survivors include her husband, Edward R. Broomall; daughters, Corine Marie Broomall of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Noele Broomall, at home; a son, Eric Broomall, at home; and her parents, Robert and Anna Mae Burr Hiance of Fort Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Marshall Catholic Newman Center. A memorial Mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home, Ashland. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

David Eugene Dalton, 46, of Highland Heights, died Sunday in a motorcycle accident o n U.S. 25 at Maher Road in Florence.
He was a construction supervisor with J. Daniels Construction Co. and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a son, Sean O'Hare of Alexandria; a daughter, Monti Abney of Butler; his mother, Ruth Bradford of Dayton; brothers, Jerry Dalton of Melbourne and Ed Dalton of Dillsboro, Ind.; a sister, Barb Foster of Ocala, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Joyce Draper England, 74, of Falmouth, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was an employee of Metropolitan Insurance and a member of Knoxville Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Terry England of Falmouth and Jerry England of Lexington; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Louvena Mae Fisk Cook Jones, 92, of Erlanger, died Monday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.
She was a retired assembler with KD Lamp Co. and a member of Oak Island Baptist Church, Independence. Her husbands, Foster Cook and Theodore "Bruce" Jones, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Proffitt of Villa Hills; a sister, Margaret Wainscott of Florence; a granddaughter, five step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Betty Scalf Jump, 68, of Florence, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a self-employed electrolysis technician and a member of Florence Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Jump; a son, Brian Jump of Hebron; a daughter, Charlsey Smith of Florence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Florence Christian Church. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Joyce Sowder Teeters, 59, of Hebron, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, Bromley, and Ludlow Senior Citizens. A son, Terry Teeters, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley C. Teeters Sr. of Hebron; daughters, Christina Watkins of Crescent Springs, Debbie Medlock of West Covington, Theresa Jenkins of Hebron and Candy Merrell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sons, Mike Teeters of Hebron and Stanley C. Teeters Jr. of Florence; a brother, Paul Sowder of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Gerry Acuff of Cleveland, Mary Floyd of Williamstown, Phyllis Reynolds of Wilmington, Ohio, Helen Fleek of Florence, Frances Maeves of Orlando and Charlene Horn of Morning View; 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dallas W. Walls, 73, of Latonia, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday at his home.
He was a retired warehouse foreman with BeKinn Trucking Co. and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Josie Walls, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Keith Walls of Hamilton, Ohio, and Dallas Walls Jr. of Latonia; daughters, Patricia Cooper of Crestwood and Debra Rich of Elsmere; his mother, Emily Walls of Florence; brothers, John Walls of Elsmere; sisters, Deanna Fultz of Richwood, Barbara Riggs of Milan, Ind., Brenda Roberts of Massachusetts and Margie Remley of Florence; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
