Edgar L. Shyrock, 91, 'lived his faith'
Edgar L. Shyrock was chairman of the board of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Covington, where he also served as Sunday School superintendent for 25 years.
"You know the old cliche about being there every time the doors were open? He was, " said a daughter, Lois Runden of Crestview Hills.
"You know the old cliche about being the pillar of the church? He was.
"He lived his faith."
Mr. Shyrock, of Ludlow, died Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was 91.
Mr. Shyrock was born in a log cabin in Jonesville, Ky., and grew up in West Covington.
He made his living as an electrician, retiring in 1973 from the Becker Electric Co. of Cincinnati.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Chapter No. 212, since 1937.
He also was a member of Goodwill Lodge No. 345 F&AM in Covington, Scottish Rite Valley of Covington and Grand Masonic Lodge of Kentucky.
Mr. Shyrock played the piano by ear and sang bass with The Rebel Brigade Barbershop Quartet and with the Sons of Dixie Barbershop Chorus, and twice was named Barbershopper of the Year.
"They sang in nursing homes and they gave concerts a couple of times a year, then they would go to regional conventions, " Mrs. Runden said.
Mr. Shyrock loved boating on the Ohio River, where he was known as "Skeets." He designed and built a 30-foot-long houseboat in his backyard and launched it in 1960.
It quickly became a favorite gathering place for family and friends. He named it the Gaylo, after his two daughters, Gayle Pauley of Southgate and Ms. Runden.
When Mr. Shyrock married
Verda Mae Henthorn in Ludlow on July 21, 1934, it was 105 degrees, Mrs. Runden said. That remains the hottest July 21 on record for the region.
They were husband and wife for 67 years.
Besides his wife and daughters, Mr. Shyrock is survived by a sister, Estelle Lancaster of Covington; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Epworth United Methodist Church in Covington.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow.
Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Patricia Sturm Bertke, 74, of Bellevue, died at 3:48 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John H. Bertke, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Terri Grefer of Cincinnati; sons, David J. Bertke of Fort Thomas and Jeffrey Bertke of Alexandria; a sister, Rita Blank of Cold Spring; brothers, Jerry Sturm of Fort Thomas and Don Sturm of Edgewood; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Sarah "Pence" Humphrey Hagedorn, 88, of Walton, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a retired factory worker with Raul Mack Shirt Co. and a member of Walton Senior Citizens. Her husband, Henry Hagedorn, died in 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Margie Humphrey Milner of Crittenden; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Margaret E. Loehle, 89, of Cincinnati, died Thursday at Jewish Hospital, Kenwood campus, Cincinnati. She was a retired retail clerk with Sears & Roebuck. Her husband, Alvin Loehle, died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Mike Loehle of London, Ohio; a sister, Fanny Davis of Southgate; a brother, Harvey Williams of Newport; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Norma Rose Moore, 62, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired warehouse worker with the Gap, Hebron.
Survivors include her husband, David E. Moore; daughters, Katherine Green of Leesburg, Karen Riott and Helen Stout, both of Ludlow; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

John W. Russell Sr., 87, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired foreman with Crouse-Hine Co., Cincinnati. His wife, Rose Russell, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, James W. Russell Jr. of Ludlow; a daughter, Joan Goetz of Villa Hills; a brother, Robert Russell of Taylor Mill; a sister, Martha Chaffer of Alabama; and four grandchildren.

Betty Gerding Schneider, 70, of Alexandria, died at 4:20 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Alexandria Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and St. Mary Seniors.
Survivors include her husband, Yandell Schneider; sons, David Schneider, Thomas Schneider and Steve Schneider, all of Alexandria, and Daniel Schneider of Grants Lick; daughters, Fran Keller of Cold Spring, Judy Thiel of Fort Thomas and Janet Gosney of Butler; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Catherine Loree Stone, 59, of Maysville, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a self-employed paralegal and a former Girl Scouts leader.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Stone; daughters, Karen Rardin of Dallas, Rebecca Adam of Elsmere and Traci Sebastian of Maysville; a son, Arthur Stone of Aurora, Ind.; sisters, Ann Triby of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Mary Schrewbury of Gary, W.Va., and Betty Bowcock of Nancy; a brother, Carl Black of California; and eight grandchildren.

Beulah Shafer Wallace, 89, of Williamstown, died at 4:20 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired seamstress with Hyde Park Clothes and Globe Tailoring, a member of Goldenaires Senior Citizens in Williamstown and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Williamstown. Her husbands, Roy C. Wallace, died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Marvin Wallace of Williamstown; daughters, Wanda Simpson of Williamstown and Ruth Barton of Burlington; a half-brother, Joe Shafer Jr. of Dry Ridge; half-sisters, Carolyn King of Williamstown, Shirley Wash of Owenton, Barbara Webster of Covington and Trudy Owens of Oxnard, Calif.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Wetterich, 81, of Dayton, died Friday at her home. She was a retired telephone operator with Hesson Answering Service and a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton.
Survivors include her husband, George Wetterich; sons, George Wetterich of Alexandria and Jerry Wetterich of Dayton; a daughter, Barbara Golatzki of Alexandria; a brother, William Metz of Newport; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
