M. Jeane Toebbe, 73, nurse and homemaker

"My mother was a homemaker first, and a nurse second." Literally.

After seeing all four children through high school, M. Jeanne Toebbe at age 45 graduated from Northern Kentucky Vocational School of Nursing in 1973, said her daughter, Marianne T. Burke of Villa Hills.

"Her whole life was devoted to caring for others. When her children were all grown, she decided she would keep taking care of people, and that's why she chose nursing, " Ms. Burke said. "She was an excellent nurse because she loved caring for people."

Mrs. Toebbe, 73, died at her Villa Hills home Tuesday night.

A licensed practical nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital for 20 years, Mrs. Toebbe was diagnosed with a brain tumor in February and became a cancer patient in that same ward she had worked for so many years.

"She was under the care of those doctors and nurses she had worked with, and they treated her like the Queen of England, " said Ms. Burke. "She was very highly regarded."

Mrs. Toebbe also was an avid square dancer, golfer and seamstress, Ms. Burke said, and a memb er of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs, St. Ann Ladies Society and a member of the church bereavement committee.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Leo E. Toebbe; sons, Greg L. Toebbe of Villa Hills and Gary R. Toebbe of Covington; daughters, Ms. Burke and Cathy Jo Ficke, both of Villa Hills; brothers, Bill Gastright of Perry Park, Carrollton, and F.X. "Babe" Gastright of Fort Mitchell; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Notre Dame Academy, 169 9 Hilton Drive, Park Hills, Ky. 41011.

Karen R. Maschmeyer Carns, 38, of Amelia, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a former teacher with St. Aloysius Orphanage and Finneytown Junior High School in Cincinnati .

She was a member of St. Bernadette Church in Cincinnati, and was active in the St. Bernadette Parent Teacher Organization. She and her husband founded the St. Bernadette Scholarship Fund, which has raised more than $70, 000 for children to continue with a Catholic education, and the Carns Coats for Kids program, which provided winter coats for children who needed them.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Carns Jr.; a son, Tommy Carns, at home; daughters, Christy Carns, Katie Carns and Kelly Carns, all at home; her mother, Marjorie Maschmeyer of Ludlow; sisters, Peggy Keen of Louisville, Nancy Steenken of Covington, Susan Ankenbauer of Newport and Connie Rechel of Cincinnati.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bellarmine Chapel, Xavier University, Cincinnati. A reception will follow in the school's Cintas Center. Memorials are suggested to Karen Carns Scholarship Fund, 1128 Hunters Run, Amelia, Ohio 45102. George H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Mary Chidlaw Friedl, 99, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 295 in Cincinnati, White Shrine of Jerusalem Covington Council No. 10, and Order of the Amaranth-Queen Esther's Court No. 21. Her husband, Charles G. Friedl Sr., died in 1965.

Survivors include a son, Charles F. Friedl Jr. of Hemphill, Texas; a daughter, Mary Sue Adams of Venice, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from noon to 1:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Episcopal Church Book of Remembrance, 326 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011; or Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.

Carl E. Hartman, 67, of Walton, died Wednesday at his son's home in Dry Ridge. He was a retired leadman with Aristech Acrylics and a retired police chief with the City of Walton. His wife, JoAnn Hartman, died in 19 94.

Survivors include a daughter, Carla Williams of Burlington; sons, Eddie Hartman of Dry Ridge and Jackie Hartman of Cincinnati; a sister, Madeline Forwith of Mansfield, Ohio; brothers, Ray Hartman, Wendel Hartman, Harry Lee Hartman and Jerry Hartman, all of Northern Kentucky; several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075 or St. Joseph Academy, 48 Needmore St., Walton, Ky. 41094.

John Herschel Hess, 90, of Alexandria, died at 1:40 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a past president of the Campbell County Farm Bureau, and a member of Kings and Queens and Sun Valley Seniors. His three wives, Mae Alford Hess, Margaret Chapel Hess and Emma Bachman Hess, died in 1972, 1978 and 1993, respectively.

Survivors include daughters, Lola Del Craig and Marilyn Gosney, both of Alexandria; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1 N. Jefferson St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001; or the charity of the donor's cho ice.

Mary Norma Earle Horesik, 78, of Kettering, Ohio, formerly of Harrison County, died Wednesday at Kettering Medical Center.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry.

James Ray Johnson, 54, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at his home. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Johnson of Cincinnati; his mother, Mary Johnson of Bellevue; sisters, Carolyn Duff of Grants Lick and Peggy Terry of Grants Lick; brothers, Charlie Johnson of Newport and Larry Johnson of Bellevue; and his fiancee, Nancy Thorman of Bellevue.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James Robert McKinney, 65, of Newport, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired salesman with Castrucci Ford, Cincinnati.

Survivors include sons, Mark McKinney of Highland Heights and Jon McKinney of Alexandria; a daughter, Maureen McKinney of Highland Heights; brothers, George McKinney of Port Charlotte, Fla., and William Kelley of Norwood, Ohio; a sister, Betty Swindle of Lakeland, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Howard G. Newby Sr., 65, of Erlanger, died Wednesday in an auto accident in Loveland, Ohio.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Olive M. Retschulte, 90, of Erlanger, died Monday at William Hughes Pavilion, Covington. She was a nurse with Booth Hospital, Covington, and a member of Florence Baptist Church. Her husband, Carl Retschulte, died in 1976.

Survivors include a niece, Mary Carol Burris of Frankfort; and Joyce Huber of Highland Heights, who took care of Mrs. Retschulte.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Florence Baptist Church, 283 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042.

Linda Marlene Snipes, 52, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was a teacher and a member of the Kentucky State University Alumni Association.

Survivors include her husband, Tim Snipes; a son, David Snipes of Cynthiana; daughters, Dawn Ritchie and Wendy Honeycutt, both of Cynthiana, and Angel Snipes of Richmond; a brother, John Brown of Lawrenceburg; a sister, Billie Lu Hicks of Lawrenceburg; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday.

James A. Thomas, 82, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nur sing home. He was a bridge and road inspector with Franklin County Engineers, a member of VFW Post No. 4719 in Gahanna, Ohio, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Thomas; a daughter, Linda Harris of Phoenix; a sister, Alma Herboltzheimer of Vienna, Va.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 8 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Blacklick, Ohio, Cemetery.

Kirk E. Wagoner, 61, of Forest Park, Ill., formerly of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Dolores "Dee" Rose Weyman Wolfzorn, 70, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at her h ome.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Her husband, William Weyman, died in 1984. A son, Robert Weyman, died in 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer Wolfzorn; daughters, Judy Heeg of Newport, Mary Weyman of Loveland, Ohio, Diane McGaha of Florence and Kathy Schneider of Cold Spring; sons, Jim Weyman of Alexandria and John Weyman of Elsmere; stepdaughters, Nancy Leften of Erlanger, Cheryl Wolfzorn of Erlanger; stepsons, David Wolfzorn and Steve Wolfzorn, both of Erlanger; brothers, Herb Weyer of Mason, Ohio, and Larry Weyer of Highland Heights; 15 grandc hildren, three great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.
