Rose Violet Holloway, beauty salon owner
Rose Violet Holloway was among the legions of women who filled the assembly lines at factories throughout the nation during World War II, turning out military materials that helped the Allies defeat enemies on two fronts.
When the war was over and the women workers were replaced by returning servicement, Mrs. Holloway didn't stay idle for long. She opened Rose's Beauty Salon in Latonia, and operated it for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Holloway, 93, died Friday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia.
Mrs. Holloway worked at several beauty salons as a young girl. When the U.S. entered World War II, she worked at the Wright aircraft engine plant in Cincinnati. When the war ended, she and other women workers were replaced by returning servicemen.
That's when Mrs. Holloway opened her own beauty shop on Decoursey Avenue, said her son, Charles Holloway Jr., a former Yealey Elementary School principal and former director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati.
Mrs. Holloway was a hard worker and astute businesswoman, said her son: "She was an excellent role model. She was energetic and enthusiastic and independent."
Mrs. Holloway learned to drive when she was 40 and bought a convertible when she was in her 60s, her son said. She never wanted "an old person's car, " he said. She didn't stop driving until 88.
She closed the beauty shop when she was 70, but instead of retiring, she started working at the Boone County Public Library.
She maintained her own home next to her son's on his Burlington farm. She filled her yard with flowers and shrubs and adopted every stray animal that came her way. "She could never stand to see an animal go hungry, " her son said. She also was an accomplished amateur painter.
She moved to Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in March. Her husband, Charles Holloway Sr., died in 1962, and a son, William Holloway, died in 1978.
