Frances Kemen, dedicated to Holy Cross Church
Frances H. Kemen lived her entire life within walking distance of Holy Cross Church in Latonia.
But the reasons she dedicated her life to the school run much deeper: Mrs. Kemen's grandfather owned the farm on which the church was built.
And when the church added a high school in 1924, Mrs. Kemen enrolled and was a member of the third graduating class in 1926.
Ms. Kemen's childhood home often received visits from the church's nuns, who would come to use the phone, since they didn't have one of their own.
"She couldn't help growing close to the people at Holy Cross. She absolutely loved that church, " said Marian Mayhall, a daughter from Georgetown, Ohio. "There was no question where her kids were going to school."
Mrs. Kemen, 91, of Latonia, died Sunday at Rosedale Nursing Home in Latonia. She was a retired seamstress with H&S; Pogue Co., Cincinnati. At Holy Cross, she was a member of the Holy Cross Alumni Association.
Her husband, Herbert W. Kemen Sr., died in 1972. A son, Herbert F. Kemen, died in 1995. A daughter, Jo Ann Wiechman, died in 2000.
Mrs. Kemen's love for Holy Cross only grew as she got older, her daughter said. In June of 1932, she and her parents drove by car to Kansas City, Mo., to pick up the church's fifth pastor, Father Louis Rieter, who held the post for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Mayhall said her mother's sewing also was legendary in Latonia, and many of her designs went promptly to charities at Holy Cross. Family members and friends also wore her outfits.
"Until high school, me and my sisters never bought clothes in a department store, " Mrs. Mayhall said.
