Sherry Noakes, showered kindness on kids, others
Sherry Ann Noakes loved kids, holidays and parties.
So Mrs. Noakes wasn't any happier - or helpful - as when all three converged.
A home room mother and dedicated volunteer at Burlington Elementary when her sons attended there, Mrs. Noakes really got busy when a holiday approached.
"She just enjoyed planning parties, anything with kids, making desserts and snacks, " said her husband, Jim. "She volunteered anytime they needed her."
Mrs. Noakes, 48, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice in Covington after a three-year battle with cancer. She was 48.
Mrs. Noakes' fondness for holidays wasn't confined to her children's school activities. At Halloween she often made her own costumes and went trick-or-treating with her sons. At Christmas, she made her own wreathes and gave them as presents to teachers at the school, and turned her Gallatin Street home into a holiday showplace.
"She was very particular about how she wanted it done, " her husband said. "People would see her in the store or stop her on the street and say: 'Oh, you're the lady who decorates.' "
Jim Noakes said the kindness that his wife showered on others during her lifetime flowed back to her during her illness. "It's just been overwhelming the amount of help we received since she got sick, " he said.
Mrs. Noakes was a former Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school worker at Burlington Baptist Church. She worked for 20 years as a secretary for Boone County Medical Lab.
