Jean Nicholson, 81, great mom and cook

Making her children's clothes was only one of the qualities that made Jean Nicholson a terrific mother and wife.

A seamstress during World War II and the daughter of native Sicilians who lived in the Bronx, N.Y., Mrs. Nicholson moved to Erlanger in 1946 after marrying Joseph Nicholson, who she met in New York while he was stationed there with the U.S. Army Postal Service.

"She made her home here and was very happy, " said Suzanne Nicholson, a daughter-in-law. "They were two peas in a pod. I don't know who depended on who more."

The couple was very active in senior groups and with St. Henry Church in Elsmere. Their children attended St. Henry schools and Mrs. Nicholson volunteered time working in the cafeteria there.

"She was a great stay-at-home mom, and she was a great Italian cook, " said Suzanne Nicholson.

Mrs. Nicholson designed and made her children's clothes and as recently as 15 years ago seamed bridal gowns for friends.

"She used the latest designs and fabric. We were probably the best dressed kids in school, " said Richard Nicholson, a son.

Jean C. Nicholson, 81, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Villa Springs nursing home in Erlanger.

Other survivors include her husband; daughters, JoAnn Nicholson Greis of Fort Thomas and Arleen "Nicki" Nicholson Wood of Lehigh, Fla.; a sister, Grace Romanelli of Fort Meyers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Margaret Setters Alcorn, 81, of Latonia, died Monday at her residence. She retired from K.D. Lamp Company in Cincinnati. She was a member of Visalia Baptist Church. Her husband, Joseph H. Setters, and a son, Alvin R. Setters, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Jo Ann Setters of Latonia, Wanda J. Setters of Taylor Mill, Barbara Kay Voss of Okeechobee, Florida; sisters, Agnes Schulker of Georgia and Evelyn Schulker of Florida; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home in Latonia. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Margaret Setters Alcorn Memorial Fund P.O. Box 15104 Covington, Kentucky 41015.

Sister Gwendolyn Ankesheiln O.S.B., 88, of St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills, died Monday at the monastery. She was a teacher.

Survivors include her Benedictine community and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Walburg Monastery. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday there. Burial will be in St. Walburg cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Walburg Monastery, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Kentucky 41017.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Huck Caudill, 81, of Lake Forest, Calif., formerly of Newport, died Monday in Lake Forest. Her husband, Col. Melvin Caudill, Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Margaret Caudill and Kathleen Johns; a son, Melvin Caudill, Jr.; and a sister, Lorraine Huck Rust of Fort Thomas.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Fort Thomas is in charge of arrangements.

James William Evans, 61, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired salesman and member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in West Chester.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Daubert Evans; son, James A. Evans of Morningview; daughters, Karla K. Evans of West Chester, Shelley Shelton of Cincinnati, Tammy Fultz of Erlanger and Julie Wells of Falmouth; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington. Memorials are suggested to Living Water Ministries 738 Sycamore St., Hamilton, Ohio 45011.

Edith Ann Hettesheimer, 69, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington. She retired from the accounting department at Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati.

Survivors include sisters, Anne Kennedy and Viola Beemon, both of Cincinnati; brothers, Charles Hettesheimer of Dry Ridge and Robert Hettesheimer of Cincinnati; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth North Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014.

Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is in charge of arrangements.

Lucy J. Hill, 92, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a retired machine operator for Kett Tool Company in Cincinnati. She was a member of Union Christian Church in Fayette County and a longtime Avon representative.

Survivors include a son, William L. Spears of Florence; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jacksonville cemetery in Bourbon County. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

Lloyd B. Mahoney, 79 of Worthville, Carroll County, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired factory worker with Rocketwood Manufacturing Co. in Charlestown, Ind. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Perry Park.

Survivors include sisters, Alma Mahoney of Carrollton and Allene Lee of Worthville; brothers, Charles Mahoney of Carrollton, John Noble Mahoney of Perry Park and Coleman Mahoney of Worthville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Carrollton.

Patrick M. "Pat" McComas, 49, of Fort Wright, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was president and owner of P.M.C. Data Services in Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Donna J. McComas of Fort Wright; a daughter, Tracy M. Hawk of Centerville, Ohio; sisters, Cindy Newborn of Covington, Kathline Matthew of Northport, Fla., and Libby Schlitt of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger.

Louise Miller, 97, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Monday, at Kenwood Terrace Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Ludlow. Her husband, Lester Miller, preceded her in death.

Survivors include, sons, Albert Miller of Sebastian, Fla., and Thomas Miller of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church, 319 Oak St., Ludlow, Ky., 41016.

Glenn "Tarp" Steger, 74, of Owenton, died Sunday at his residence. He was a farmer and attended Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, David Steger of Glencoe, Steve Steger of Nicholasville; a daughter, Kathy Harris of Plantation, Fla.; brothers, Clinton Steger of Cincinnati and Norvin "Hook" Steger of Anderson, Ind.; sisters, Juanita Comptin of Bakersfield, Calif., Dorothy Atha of Monterey, Velma Day and Sylvia Hunter both of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Homes, Inc., Owenton. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Grants Lick.

Dorothy Fay Stull, 73, formerly of Union, died at 11:26 p.m. Monday at Mercy Hospital Clermont, Batavia, Ohio. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Stull of Union and Gayle McCreary of Danville; sisters, Lou Boden of Alexandria and Mable Boden of Morehead; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

David W. Thomas, 70, of Morningview, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a machinist for U.S. Playing Card.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Thomas of Morningview; sons, James R. Silcott, Donald H. Silcott, Timothy N. Thomas and David S. Thomas; a brother, Dr. Thad Thomas; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia, Ohio. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Withamsville, Ohio.

Dwayne Jefferson Turner, 37, died Sunday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was a credit reporter for Equifax.

Survivors include his father, Jeff Turner of Carrollton; mother, Yvonne Gordy Sullivan of Owenton; stepfather, Donald Sullivan of Owenton; stepmother, Mary Turner of Carrollton; stepbrothers, Gene Sullivan of Owenton and Beau Turner of Carrollton; sisters, Lesia Soliman of Owenton, Tina Moore of Owenton, and Billy Kay Pinkstaff of Lexington; a stepsister, Crystal Turner of Carrollton; nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Owenton I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Owenton.

McDonald Funeral Homes, Inc., Owenton, is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence E. Ulrich, 72, of Newport, died Monday at his home. He was a truck driver with Keebler Cookie Co., a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 114 and Newport Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Ulrich; daughters, Sharon Peace of Harrisburg, Va., Michelle Colangelo of Florence, Vickie Henderson of Newport, Donna Lowery and Melody Miller, both of Covington; sons, Melvin Ulrich and Richard Ulrich, both of Newport; a sister, Vivian Meyers of Covington; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Florence Edna Winder, 100, of Florence, formerly of Lenoxburg, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a cook and a member of the Nazarene Church of God. Her first husband, Eward Egbert, died at an early age. Her husband of 29 years, Bryce Winder, died in 1978.

Survivors include sisters, Lola Creekbaum of Falmouth and Evelyn Hamilton of Lenoxburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery.

R. Emmett Woods, 77, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired salesman for Friden Adding Machines in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hiberians, and a lifetime member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Marianne Terwort Woods of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Maura Snyder of Independence, Kathleen Woods of Fort Wright, Sara Woods of Louisville, Molly Woods of Fort Mitchell, and Eileen Woods of Crescent Springs; brother, John J. Woods of Florence; sisters, Anne Hiltz of Erlanger, Helen McGinnis of Edgewood and Kathleen Cahill of Edgewood; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Road, Erlanger, Kentucky 41018.

Michael Lee Woolf, 49, of Florence, died Tuesday at his residence. He was an optician with Schroer Eye Center in Delhi Township. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Woolf of Florence; mother, Nora Woolf of Crescent Springs; sons, Michael, Joseph, Richard and Timothy Woolf, all of Florence; brothers, Darrell Woolf of Mesa, Ariz., James Woolf of Thompson, Ga., Jeffrey Woolf and Tommy Woolf, both of Zebulon, Ga., and Aaron Woolf of Covington; sisters, Sharon Poe of Erlanger, Lynn Gillispie of Thompson, Ga., Brenda Woolf, Trisha Betsill, Louise Sorrell and Vera Hammond, all of Zebulon, Ga., and Lisa Godsey of Latonia; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Taylor Mill.
