Mary Jane Newhall, teacher and mother
Mary Jane Moss fell in love with her sweetheart, Stewart Lincoln Newhall, while they were attending Holmes High School in 1940. She didn't even let World War II separate them.
They graduated from Holmes in 1941 and after Stewart Newhall had attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, for one year, he joined the Navy. She countered by joining the Waves, the Navy women's corps, which allowed couples to serve together.
"She had always told me that it was a very romantic time, " said her daughter, Sharon Warner of Union.
The Newhalls were both stationed in Washington, D.C., where he was a scout pilot and she was a decoder. They were married
in uniform, but she was forced to resign from the service when she became pregnant in 1944. Her husband was discharged a year later at the end of the war.

Mrs. Newhall graduated from Villa Madonna before the school became Thomas More College in 1963, and received a master's degree from Northern Kentucky University two years later. She was only a few hours short of earning a doctorate, her daughter said.
Ms. Warner said her mother was a special teacher and mother.
"She loved children, " Ms. Warner said. "I was her only child, and she was very good to me and a very special mom."
