Frank Purdy, 87, started WGUC radio
Frank Purdy could have worked in education or politics. He could have been a lawyer or a media founder. As it turned out, Mr. Purdy did all that and more.
Frank Thomas Purdy, 87, a lawyer and former longtime administrator at the University of Cincinnati who started the campus radio station, died Monday at his home in Springdale, Ohio.
A Covington native, Mr. Purdy graduated from Holmes High School in 1931 and earned bachelor's and law degrees at the University of Cincinnati.
He was an aide to Ohio Congressman William E. Hess before enlisting in the Navy in World War II, where he served as a cryptographer translating and decoding Japanese military information. Mr. Purdy, who already spoke French, German and Spanish, spent 13 months learning Japanese and worked as a translator with the Joint Intelligence Command in the Pacific. "He knew he would be serving, and he looked for something he was particularly adept at and interested in, " said Jeannette Ammann Purdy, his wife of 62 years.
After the war, Mr. Purdy returned to Cincinnati and practiced law before becoming secretary of the UC Alumni Association. He was part of UC's administration for 23 years until he retired in 1973 as vice president for development and community relations. He served as vice president emeritus until his death.
During his tenure at UC, Mr. Purdy handled legal affairs and founded WGUC and the Library Guild, now the Friends of University Libraries. Mr. Purdy also was a member of the first board of trustees for WCET, Greater Cincinnati's public television station, and was a past president of the Wyoming School Board of Education and helped establish the Wyoming School Foundation.
"He was very respected for his public service and was a very witty man and well-read scholar, " Mrs. Purdy said.
