Lyle Bennett, former deputy jailer
Lyle Bennett befriended many inmates during his seven years as a deputy jailer at the Kenton County Jail.
"Lyle liked people and was a very out-going person, " said Helen, his wife. "He liked to help people by just talking with them and listening to them."
Lyle Harold Bennett, 65, of Owenton, died at 2:35 a.m. Thursday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Mrs. Bennett said her husband went to work at the jail in the late '70s, but was forced to quit about seven years later because of health problems.
"He said, 'If you are good to (the inmates), they'll be good to you, ' " she said.
Mrs. Bennett said after her husband quit working, he was always around the house to help his family.
Also surviving are his wife, Helen Bennett; sons, John Threlkeld of Butler, Mike Threlkeld of Erlanger, David Threlkeld of Owenton, Jimmy Threlkeld of Independence and Steve Threlkeld of Villa Hills; daughters, Janis Snyder of Sparta, Dorothy Riley of Crittenden, Sandy Prater of Taylor Mill, Karen Malott of Elsmere, Jeneva Horton of Ludlow, Rose Bennett of Union and Threasa Murphy of Owenton; brothers, Billy Bennett of Columbus, Ohio, and Charlie Bennett of Covington; sisters, Lil Bowman, Alma More of Covington, Rachel Klette of Union, Donna Fugate of Newport, Mary Lewis of Dry Ridge and Dorothy Ritchfield of Aurora, Ind.; 28 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Rachel Belle Diesel Barker, 90, of Carthage, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was the retired owner of Pat's Grocery, Carthage, and a member of Carthage United Methodist Church, California. Her husband, Homer "Pat" Barker, died in 1984.
Survivors include her son, Michael Barker of California; a sister, Naomi Davis of Greenup; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. July 28 at Carthage United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, Carthage. Memorials are suggested to Carthage United Methodist Church, Carthage United Methodist Church, 199 Carthage Road, California, Ky. 41007.
Sudie Kendall Conrad, 94, of Cynthiana, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday at Grand Haven Nursing Home, Cynthiana. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Cynthiana. Her husband, Raymond Conrad, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Conrad Parke of Lexington; sons, Charles Ray Conrad of Burlington and Edward Durant Conrad of Apple Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.
Randall R. "Whitey" Elbert, 57, of Independence, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a locomotive engineer with Cincinnati Milacron, a volunteer fireman and a member of St. Cecilia Church, Independence.
Survivors include a daughter, Shonnie Kunstman of Independence; a son, Randall R. Elbert Jr. of Independence; brothers, Herbie Elbert and Wayne Elbert, both of Independence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Satur day at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Independence. Sister Beatrice Flickinger, O.S.B., 92, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at St. Walburg Monastery infirmary in Villa Hills. She served at Villa Madonna Academy for 60 years until her retirement in 1987.
Survivors include a sister, Hilda Austing of Cincinnati; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Walburg Monastery. Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Walburg Monastery. Burial will be in St. Walburg Cemetery, Villa Hills. Memorials are suggested to St. Walburg Monastery, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017. Jean Tussey Gould, 63, of Florence, died at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired employee of Tressa Hair Products, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Gould; sons, Eric Rice of North Lewisburg, Ohio, and Mark Gould of Florence; a daughter, Vickie Lipscomb of Florence; a brother, Jack Tussey of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
Dorothy Ogburn Harmon, 82, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Indian Creek Health and Rehabilitation Center, Coryden, Ind. She was a homemaker, and a member of Ghent Baptist Church and Ghent Order of the Easter Star. Her husband, Woodrow Harmon, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, William Harmon of Ghent; a daughter, Janet Marie Sellers of Elizabeth; brothers, Ernest Ogburn and Harley Ogburn, both of Carrollton; a sister, June Ball of Versailles, Ind.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
John Hayes, 53, of Crittenden, died Thursday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Harry Junior Smith, 82, of Erlanger, died at 6:41 a.m. Thursday at Village Care Center in Erlanger. He was a retired bottler with Wiedemann Brewery, Newport, a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Smith; a son, Harry Thomas Smith of Cincinnati; a daughter, Nancy Jean Bowman of Alexandria; a brother, Roy Leonard Smith of Dayton; sisters, Evelyn Katherine Bornhorn of Crescent Springs and Betty Roat of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Southgate Fire Department, 122 Electric Ave., Southgate, Ky. 41071.
Gladys Kramer Steffen, 69, of Cold Spring, died at 5:20 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Donald "Smoke" Steffen; a daughter, Dawn Kremer of Alexandria; and two granddaughters.
No services are planned. Cremation will be at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Bishop Brossart School, Jefferson and Grove streets, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.
Edna May Woodward, 81, of Milford, died Wednesday at her brother's home in Augusta. She was a homemaker and a member of Milford Christian Church. Her husband, Thurman Woodward, died in 1984.
Survivors include brothers, Eldon Nickoson and Delmar Nickoson, both of Augusta.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Concord Cemetery. Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta, is handling arrangements.
