Eleanor Goetz, 85, co-owned family nursery
Eleanor Goetz was more than the co-owner of a family nursery in Edgewood.
To her children, she was their strongest supporter. To her husband, she was a partner and best friend. To her neighbors and customers, she was a trusted adviser who shared secrets of growing plants and attracting hummingbirds.
"She was very supportive and helped raise her four grandchildren, " said a daughter, Jan Rankin of Edgewood.
"My parents were married
for nearly 60 years. And she had a lot of friends. She was a very social person."
Mrs. Goetz, 85, of Edgewood, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She was the co-owner of Goetz Nursery and Greenhouse in Edgewood.
Mrs. Goetz and her husband, Joseph, ran the nursery for more than 20 years before shutting it down several years ago.
Their children worked in the nursery shop and also developed green thumbs, according to Mrs. Rankin.
In fact, a neighbor once said of Mr. Goetz that "I think if Joe put a match stick in the ground, it would grow."
Mr. Goetz, in turn, complimented his wife, who served as bookkeeper, cook and "everything."
In a 1991 interview, Mr. Goetz said some men worked weekends at the greenhouse for $1.50 an hour just to eat his wife's cooking.
Mrs. Goetz, a native of Ludlow, enjoyed watching the Cincinnati Reds and doing crossword puzzles, her daughter said.
Mrs. Rankin said her parents gave each of their children a plot of land in Edgewood to build their homes.
"Her doctors all found her to be a delightful person. She had a great spirit, up until the end, " Mrs. Rankin said.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Goetz is survived by her sons, Stan Goetz and Ron Goetz, both of Edgewood; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
