Norman Holbrook, Ludlow firefighter
Norman W. Holbrook, a volunteer firefighter for 39 years in Ludlow and fire chief for two years, died Sunday at his home.
Mr. Holbrook, 64, was honored by a proclamation from the Ludlow City Council for his years of service when he retired in July 1999. He was chief during the late 1990s.
Mr. Holbrook was a bear of a man who believed in helping his community, said his friends.
He tried to improve dispatching services in Ludlow and was often at the scene of fires, no matter what time of the day or night.
"He was a very dedicated chief over the years. He did a fine job when he was there, " said Ludlow Mayor Ed Schroeder.
Mr. Holbrook, a native of West Covington, "did a lot of good service for the city, " Schroeder said.
A daughter, Cindy Powell of Ludlow, said her father often played Santa Claus for children at Christmas time.
He helped organize Fourth of July festivals and was a dedicated coach for youth football and Knothole baseball, Mrs. Powell said.
Mr. Holbrook and his wife, Bennie Sue Holbrook, were married
for 45 years.
"He was very outgoing, very honest and giving, " she said.
He was a retired independent carrier with the Kentucky Enquirer and was a responder with the Ludlow Life Squad. He was a member of the Ludlow Park Board for 25 years and Teamsters Union Local No. 100 in Cincinnati.
Besides his wife and daughter, Mr. Holbrook is survived by sons, Steven Holbrook of Ludlow and Rodney Holbrook of Winchester, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Beatrice Treadway Bolen, 73, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired real estate agent with Century 21, a waitress and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence. Her husband, Richard D. Bolen, died in 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer L. Lang of Independence; sons, Richard E. Bolen and Phillip M. Bolen, both of Independence; sisters, Lois Roberts of Independence and Ruth Bramel of Fort Wright; a brother, Denton Treadway of Independence; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Michael J. Daly Jr., 87, of Covington, died Sunday at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was a salesman with Wilson Imperial chemical company in Ohio and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. His wife, "Tootie" Daly, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Campbell of Florence; and two grandsons.
Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Mr. Daly bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Dorothy L. Alexander Davis, 79, of Covington, died at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a retired employee of Overhead Door Co. and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Grant County. Her husband, William E. Davis, died in 1969. A son, Ulous J. "Bucky" Yancey, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Gayle Bickers of Elsmere and Norma Jean Miles of Carrollton; a brother, John E. Alexander of Plainfield, Ind.; a sister, Shirleen French of Warsaw; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Terrence James Flynn, 57, of Louisville, formerly of Newport, died July 1 at his home. He was disabled.
Survivors include a brother, Timothy T. Flynn of Monument Beach, Mass.

Robert H. Gripshover, 74, of Erlanger, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Johnny Hornbeck, 64, of Mount Olivet, died Monday at Nicholas County Hospital, Carlisle.
He was a retired car salesman, a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church and a former member of Mount Olivet Lions Club. He was a past treasurer of the Mount Olivet Library board.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Orme Hornbeck; daughters, Mary Ruth Hughes and Marsha Turner, both of Mount Olivet; sisters, Jill Campbell of Mays Lick and Betty Clever of Lawrenceburg; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

William Hunter, 56, of New Richmond, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Monday at Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati.

Lucille Turner Hurt, 81, of Taylor Mill, died at 3 p.m. Monday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Pendleton County.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond L. Hurt; a daughter, Angela Hurt of Taylor Mill; sons, Lyle D. Daugherty of Covington and Terry L. Daugherty of Hebron; a sister, Marie Bowling of Crittenden; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Martha H. Overstreet Jobe, 83, of Dayton, died at 2:19 p.m. Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Grady P. Jobe Sr.; daughters, Patricia Aldering of Fort Thomas, Carol Marie Goins of Crittenden and Monica Eve Wever of Walton; sons, Leon Jobe of Dayton, Larry Grady Jobe of Bellevue, Grady P. Jobe Jr. of Elsmere and Gary L. Jobe of Ludlow; a sister, Alberta Menefee of Covington; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane Arens Jones, 76, of Covington, died at 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a waitress, a dispatcher with Newport Yellow Cab, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Jones and David Jones, both of Covington; and sisters, Teddy Davenport of Smithville and Pat Caudell of Covington.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Ms. Jones bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Sonny Mills; daughters, Joie Brinkley of Independence and Jan Amshoff of Georgetown; a brother, Garfield Sexton of Independence; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia E. Findley Moore, 91, of Dayton, died Monday at Lakeside Heath Care Center, Highland Heights.
She was a baker with Lings Bakery and a member of St. Bernard Church in Dayton and Kersten O'Day VFW Auxiliary Drill Team. Her husband, Clarence Moore, and a daughter, Carole Schreiber, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Donnie Steltenpohl of Cold Spring; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Tristin Micheal Saye Perkins, son of Bobby Perkins and Jacqueline Souder, both of Williamstown, was stillborn Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include brothers, Tylor Souder, Tanner Souder, Brent Perkins, Derek Perkins and Matthew Perkins, all of Williamstown; a sister, Taylor Souder of Williamstown; grandparents, Thelma Hundley of Dry Ridge and Donald Sawyers of Hamilton, Ohio, Butch Perkins of Corinth and Rose Holland of Crittenden; and great-grandparents, L. She was a deputy in the Kenton County Circuit Court Clerk's office.

He was a retired employee of Owen Electric Co., and a member of Rural Auto Parks Racing Team and Glencoe Church of Christ, where he was a member of the board. His first wife, Thelma Turner Snell, died in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Alexander Snell; sons, Jimmy Snell of Erlanger and Dan Thomas of Florence; daughters, Lee Ann Graves of Worthville and Victoria Snell of Glencoe; his parents, Eual Snell and Hazel Maddox Snell; a brother, Richard Snell of Glencoe; and eight grandchildren.
