Elizabeth Verst, advised single moms
Elizabeth Verst never let life's problems drive away her trademark smile, her love of family, or her dedication to community and church activities.
While she never had kids of her own, Mrs. Verst was viewed as nothing less than a mother to hundreds of woman she counseled in the Legion of Mary, a group dedicated to bringing single mothers back into the church.
"She never met anyone she didn't like, and she never spoke bad about anyone." said her husband, Joseph H. Verst. "Her greatest joy in life was helping others.
Elizabeth H. "Betty" Verst, 94, of Elsmere, died Tuesday at Madonna Manor Nursing Home, Villa Hills.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere. She was also a member of the St. Henry Ladies Society, Community Senior Citizens and Prime Time Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Verst's dedication to the church extended far beyond the Legion of Mary. She was a regular at bingo and parish card games and organized several senior citizens' programs and church parties.
"She never missed an event, " her husband said. "Church activities were very important to her."
In her free time, Mrs. Verst loved to work in her backyard garden with her husband, planting vegetables for her family and friends.
The two celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last week. Mr. Verst credits his wife's positive attitude, kind disposition and love for the marriage's success.
Other survivors include a brother, Bill Roth of Fort Wright; sisters, Theresa Krienest of Erlanger and Rita Kramer of Elsmere.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church. Visitation is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Robinson Theodore Conrad III, 38, of Covington, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was an auto mechanic.
Survivors include sons, Phillip Hall and Robert Cogsville, both of Covington; daughters, Ayisha Hall, Angela Hall and Robin Conrad, all of Covington; his mother, Margie S. Conrad of Covington; brothers, Reginald Stewart, Rodney Conrad, Donald Conrad and Alfred Conrad, all of Covington; and sisters, Marilyn Conrad, Frances Conrad, Cynthia LeMarbe, Donna Frazier, Robin Conrad, Brenda Wallers and Robin Fann, all of Covington, and Mary F. Goodrich of Indianapolis.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at United Community Christian Church, Covington. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.
Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Ansel Houston Cox, 71, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital, LaGrange.
Survivors include a son, Ansel Cox Jr. of Carrollton; a daughter, Jenny Marie Maddox of Worthville; brothers, Johnnie H. Cox of Bedford and Woodrow Cox of Madison, Ind.; and a granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Bedford.
Betty M. Eagle, 74, of Burlington, died at 1:55 a.m. Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a self-employed beautician. Her husband, Walter Eagle, died in 1995.
Survivors include her mother, Rose E. Henry of Cincinnati; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at convenience of the family. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Hazel Louise Hargett Gordley, 87, of Augusta, died Tuesday at Augusta Healthcare.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Albert Earl "Jim" Gordley, died in 1985. A son, Billy A. Gordley, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Earl Gordley of Germantown and David Gordley of Augusta; daughters, Mary Sue Briley of California and Debrah Hampton of Flemingsburg; her mother, Vica Hargett of Maysville; a sister, Viola Cummins of Florida; a brother, Reynolds Hargett of Augusta; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.
Betsy Kimbrough, 87, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
She was a retired bookkeeper for Harrison County High School and a member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Jack Kimbrough of Shelbyville and Jerry Kimbrough of Berry; daughters, Judy Kimbrough and Jill Kimbrough, both of Lexington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.

Ama Slayback Munday, 91, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Florence, died Tuesday in Myrtle Beach.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oceanview Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach. She was a former member of Florence Baptist Church and a member of Order of the Eastern Star No. 189 Greenridge Chapter in Scranton, Pa.
Her first husband, Clarence Elry Slayback, died in 1975. Her second husband, Lyman B. Munday, died in 1990. A son, Thomas E. Slayback, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice C. Myers of Myrtle Beach; a son, Ronald Slayback of Port Richey, Fla.; sisters, Frances Libuda of Florence and Gladys Tupman of Erlanger; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Earl Riley, 76, of Morning View, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a landscaper with Upton Landscaping and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Elota "Bootsie" Riley; a daughter, Barbara Austin of Erlanger; sons, Thomas Riley of Taylor Mill and T. J. Riley of Morning View; a brother, Gilbert Ray of Florence; 21 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

William Thomas Rogers, 47, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a stock clerk with General Electric and a member of United Auto Workers Union No. 647, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rogers; a stepson, Eric Helton of Bellevue; his parents, Carlos B. and M. Irene Rogers of Edgewood; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Florence Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Betty Hyatt Utz, 65, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oakland Christian Church. Her husband, Lester Utz, died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Roger Utz of Williamstown; daughters, Rhonda Hutchinson and Missy Taylor, both of Falmouth, and Cathy Himmelmann of Hebron; her mother, Olive Hyatt of Cynthiana; brothers, Donald Hyatt of Bamburg, S.C., and Paul Hyatt of Cynthiana; a sister, Pauline Chalfant of Falmouth; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Frances Wiglesworth, 89, of Cynthiana, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home.
