Leonard Kallmeyer, 55, a friend to all

Lenny Kallmeyer always went beyond the call of duty.

Philip Eid, a witness to history of aviation

Philip L. Eid's interest in flight spanned from Orville Wright to Chuck Yeager.

As a boy, he met the man whose 12-second flight changed the world in 1903; years later, stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, he was part of the team that helped Yeager break the sound barrier in 1947.

Mr. Eid, formerly of Woodlawn, Ky., died Wednesday at his home in Cincinnati. He was 82.

The retired machinist with General Electric was an aviation historian. He studied aviation at Cincinnati Automotive High School in the 1930s, then was a B-17 gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II, seeing action in Italy. After the war, he re-enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, where he helped found the Air Force Museum, and at Edwards Air Force Base.

"Most people have all kinds of junk in the rafters of their garage. We had airplanes in the rafters, " said his daughter, Phyllis Eid- Nienaber.

"He would tear apart a Volkswagen Beetle to put the engine in a glider, and then take my sons up in it, " Ms. Eid-Nienaber said. "He had so much enthusiasm and knowledge about aviation, and that came out especially around boys who shared his interest and imagination for flight."

Several years ago, he donated his extensive collection to the Aviation Archives at Wright State University, where he was a member of the American Aviation Historical Society.
