Donald Ives, Devou Park chairman, P&G; engineer
One of the legacies of Donald Thomas Ives figures to be the improvement of Devou Park in Covington over the next several years.
Mr. Ives was chairman of the Devou Park Advisory Committee from 1997 through 2000. Under his leadership, a 20-year improvement plan for the 704-acre park was adopted and changes already have started to be made.
"People felt Don would be the man to get the project off the ground, " said Mr. Ives' wife of 43 years, Jeannine Thelen Ives. "I think the park will be a significant legacy."
Mr. Ives, 65, of Latonia, died at 3:10 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
Less than two months ago, Mr. Ives had been well enough to play golf. But on June 16 he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer and survived only six more weeks.
'It was a very aggressive cancer, " said his wife.
He was a retired chemical engineer with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia, a former Knothole baseball and youth basketball coach and a member of the Holy Cross Boosters. He was a Navy veteran.
As chairman of the Devou Park Advisory Committee, Mr. Ives was adamant about making improvements without destroying the heavily-wooded tranquility of the park.
"We don't want to make it a mega-playground, " he said during his tenure as chairman. "We want to maintain the beauty of the park. Our main purpose is to make the park family-friendly.
"All of the (improvement) projects are more of a passive nature. That is the general tone of what we feel the public and the neighboring cities want."
Mrs. Ives said her husband was a "very calm person."
"He had no temper, " she said. "He was not excitable. He was cool and collected."
