Sister Alice McAvoy taught for 22 years

Sister Alice McAvoy, O.S.B. led a quiet life dedicated to God and her religious community.

She taught school for 22 years, then served as her monastery's bookkeeper.

Sister Alice, 94, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills, which she had entered in 1934.

She taught fourth grade at St. Benedict School in Covington from 1936 to 1940, then moved into secondary education at Holy Cross School in Latonia (1943-53), St. James School in Brooksville (1953-59) and St. Henry High School in Erlanger (1959-61).

"She was a very quiet person, dedicated to her community and the religious life, " said Sister Andrea Collopy.

She loved reading. Works by Belgian priest Heny Nowen, and Thomas Merton, a convert from agnosticism who became a Trappist monk, were among her favorites.

"She had a quiet, subdued sense of humor, " said Sister Andrea. "And, even though she was quiet, she enjoyed life and being around people."

Survivors include two nieces, who are both Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, and a nephew.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Walburg Monastery. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the convent. Burial will be in St. Walburg Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Walburg Monastery, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Belinda Joyce Rose Dudgeon, 38, of Covington, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at University Medical Center, Lexington.

She was an operations clerk with Huntington Bank.

Survivors include sons, Andrew Dudgeon of Covington and Ryan Dudgeon of Tay lor Mill; her parents, Dexter Rose and Pat Adams Rose, both of Covington; brothers, Bill Rose of Hebron and Scott Rose of Williamstown; a sister, Theresa Rose of Covington; and grandparents, Evelynn Fuson of Covington and Elmer Rose of Woodbyne.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Belinda Dudgeon Memorial Trust Fund, Huntington Bank, 540 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Chester Earl Ecklar Sr., 86, of Corinth, died Wednesday at Samaritan Hospital, Lexington.

He was a fireman, a retired employee of National Lead Industries, Cincinnati, and a member of Erlanger Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Ecklar; sons, Chester Ecklar Jr. of Corinth and Dave Ecklar of Taylor Mill; a brother, Delbert Ecklar of Minerva, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Church Cemetery, Florence.

Clara M. Harper, 91, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a retired clerk with the Campbell County Circuit Court Clerk's office, Newport, and a former member of the "3S" Club of Southgate Super Seniors.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary E. Richardson of Cold Spring; sons, Franklin H. Harper Sr. of Erlanger and Daniel E. Harper of Cold Spring; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, with prayers following. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Health Care Center, 3510 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

Sister Mary Hils, 92, of Versailles, formerly of Newport, died Saturday in Versailles.

She was a member of the Order of St. Joseph the Worker.

Survivors include a sister, Veronica Meyers of Newport; and a brother, Howard Hils of Fort Thomas.

Services were Wednesday at Taylor Manor Nursing Home Chapel, Versailles. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Versailles.

Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, is handling arrangements.

Webster Hocker, 72, of Covington, died Saturday in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

He was a retired machinist and a member of VFW Post No. 7453.

Survivors include a daughter, Stacey Hocker; sons, Redd Hocker and Jeremiah Myers; brothers, Green Hocker, Kenneth Hocker and I.G. Hocker; a sister, Charity Hocker; stepchildren, Helen Harleston, Latonya Campbell, Aduke Sonubi, Neal Smith and Gwendolyn Smith.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Community Christian Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.

Ellis Hodge, 58, of Covington, died Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Marie Hollander, 99, of Covington, died today at Marjorie T. Lee Nursing Home in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

James Johnson, 70, of Las Vegas, formerly of Fort Thomas, died May 30 in Las Vegas.

He was a retired fork lift operator with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, James Johnson III of Las Vegas; sisters, Dalphane Johnson of Las Vegas, Joyce Vaughan of Independence, Norma Jean Turner of Jackson, Shirley Feahr of Morning View and Janice Minnich of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Beatrice Robb, 78, of Latonia, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired waitress with Frisch's Restaurant in Fort Wright. Her husband, Raymond Robb, died in 1976.

Survivors include a son, Donnie H. Crease of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brothers, Donald Brandenberg of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Forrest Brandenberg of Wilmington, Ohio, Tracy Brandenberg of Kings Mill, Ohio, and Dexter Brandenberg of Cincinnati; a sister, Glendene Ingram of Latonia; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at noon Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Harold Edward Schultz, 75, of Fort Mitchell, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a retired switchman and yard conductor with C&O; Railroad in Silver Grove and CSX Railroad, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Newhouse Schultz; daughters, Debbie Moellman of Alexandria, Karen Dunlevy of Cold Spring and Terri Schultz of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Stan Schultz of Melbourne; sisters, Anna Mae Gosney and Della Kramer, both of Alexandria, and Frieda Hartig of Melbourne; brothers, Herbert Schultz and Edwin Schultz, both of Melbourne, and Leonard Schultz of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Wanda Ruth French Shepherd, 68, of California, died Thursday at home. She was a member of the Eastern Star No. 340 in Foster, Ky.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin Delano Shepherd of California; sons, Jim Shepherd of California and Scott Shepherd of Berry; daughters, Robin Shepherd-Ryan of Dania Beach Florida, Donna Dougherty of California and Jill Dishman of California; sisters, Hazel Shepherd of California, Lois Schrader and Betty Yopa both of Yorkville, Ohio, Karen Creamer of Rayland, Ohio; brothers Harry French of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Larry French of Dillonvale, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery.

Gayle Patrick Stratton, 72, of Covington, died Sunday at her home.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include daughters, Angie Megerle, Jenny Jacobs and Patty Howland, all of Covington, Kathy Winkle of Butler and Patty Moffett of New Jersey; sons, Mike Stratton of Taylor Mill, Chuck Stratton of Newport, Eddie Stratton and Gayle Stratton, both of Covington, and Mark Stratton of Independence; nine stepchildren, 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Cemetery.

Ola Stull, 81, died today at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Dottie Sargeant Wagner, 73, of Dayton, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was the former owner of Walt's Center Lanes, Newport.

Survivors include a son, Gary Sargeant of Newport; daughters, Glenna Davis, Tonya Spradlin, Kathy Kleier and Anita Elkins, all of Newport; sisters, Berneice Dalton, Peggy Oberle and Gerry Ludlum, all of Lebanon, Ohio; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Charles Whitton Jr., 65, of Covington, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

He was a retired machine operator. His wife, Vivian Louise Whitton, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Jim Rudde of Independence, and John Rudde and Ralph Rudde, both of Morning View; daughters, Stella Lanham and Mary Moses, both of Latonia, Shirley Pinkerton of Erlanger and Bobbie Girdler of Covington; a sister, Dolly Whitton of Cincinnati; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Helen Wilson, 55, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Julia Margaret Shirley Wilson, 84, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, West Park Campus, Cincinnati.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Basil Wilson, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Marsh of Algrays, Mich.; sons, Billy R. Shirley of Fayetteville, Ohio, John R. Shirley and Ronald L. Shirley, both of Cincinnati; a brother, James Cummins of Independence; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
