James Y. Fields Sr., Maysville farmer

James Y. "Happy" Fields Sr.'s life as a farmer in Maysville gave him the chance to do the two things he loved best: watch things grow, and keep watch over his family.

His back yard was filled with pear trees, apple trees and vegetables. And his fields were full of tobacco.

"More or less being able to grow stuff is what he really enjoyed, " said his daughter-in-law, Mary Fields. "If it grew, he liked it."

Mr. Fields, 69, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at his home.

"He never wanted for anything, " his daughter-in-law said. "He was a wonderful provider and a wonderful man."

Mr. Fields also worked for the Mason County Health Department. He was a Korean War veteran and served three years in the Army.

Mr. Fields lived up to his nickname, his daughter-in-law said. He was a practical joker, was always in a good mood and made others feel good, too, she said.

She revived Mr. Fields' nickname when she met her husband, James Y. Fields Jr., 19 years ago.

"He had always been called 'Happy' by his friends, but I started calling him it because he was just always in a good mood, " she said.
