Charles Grizzell, iron worker, helped found fire department
Charles Grizzell was always on the lookout for others, especially when their lives were at stake.
That is why friends and family were amazed but not surprised when Mr. Grizzell once saved the life of a fellow firefighter who had suffered a heart attack while battling a blaze in Morning View.
"He got a tremendous amount of satisfaction by helping other people, " said Joyce Simpson, a daughter, of Florence. "Things like that just put the biggest smile on his face."
Charles A. Grizzell, 76, of Kenton, died of cancer Friday at his home. He was an iron worker with Iron Workers Union Local No. 44 and a member of the Kenton Community Fire District board, Kenton Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 362 F&AM and Kenton No. 9 Daughters of America.
Mr. Grizzell's firefighting career began when he realized that parts of Kenton County had inadequate fire safety. Mr. Grizzell and two friends decided to lobby the county and eventually started the Kenton Community Fire Department. Until his final days, Mr. Grizzell was an avid supporter of the organization.
It was rare to catch Mr. Grizzell without a smile on his face, family members say.
Although he lived only a short walk from a lake, Mrs. Simpson said her father preferred to spend his free time reading anything he could get his hands on.
"It wasn't just a certain type of book, " she said.
"He read anything and everything. He just loved it."
