A.B. Murphy, gas station owner and square dancer
A. B. "Murph" Murphy was an energetic man who managed to fit in many rounds of square dancing with running his gas station in Covington.
Mr. Murphy, a Pennsylvania native, was a member of Marge's Senior Citizen's Bank, the Senior Citizens Square Dancing Club and the owner-operator of M & L Texaco on Pike and Willow Run in Covington.
A son, John B. Murphy of Covington, said his father put in a lot of hours at work but also managed to have fun and help others.
"He was very outspoken, " John Murphy said of his father.
"We spent quite a bit of time together at the filling station. I started working there when I was 10. As a father, he did very well. He was proud of me."
Mr. Murphy, 85, of Fort Wright, died at 11:34 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was a former Fort Wright police officer, a member of the Lookout Heights Civic Club and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Mary Maurer, died in 1990.
Mr. Murphy taught his son how to repair cars and live life. Mr. Murphy believed in helping others, whether it was driving senior citizens to outings or saying a kind word, his son said.
"He liked being around people, " John Murphy said.
Besides his son, Mr. Murphy is survived by a sister, Eleanor Murphy Bucar of Jeffersonville, N.Y.; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Howard Alexander, 67, of Crittenden, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.
James Robert Baker, 67, of Elsmere, died Thursday at his home. He was a ramp attendant with American Airlines and a retired employee of Crescent Paper Tube Co.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie M. Baker; daughters, Mary Lewis of Union, Karen Baker and Diana Baker, both of Elsmere; a son, George Warner; a sister, Areta M. Rice of Elsmere; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Kenneth R. "Pootie" Bonhaus, 73, of Dayton, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Florence Park Care Center. He was a retired tool and die maker with Ford Motor Co., a former vice mayor of the city of Dayton and a former lieutenant of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Mulloy Council No. 1301 and Bellevue Vets, and was a Navy veteran. A daughter, Connie Bonhaus, died in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Poe Bonhaus; sons, Ken Bonhaus of West Chester, Ohio, and Dave Bonhaus of Southgate; a brother, Al Bonhaus of Ohio; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Manola "Nodi" Burchell, 85, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at her home.

Lucille Davis, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 11:40 a.m. Monday at Manor Care Woodside Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a retired seamstress with J. C. Penney Co. and a member of First Christian Church, Covington. A son, Harold Mulligan, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, J. T. Mulligan of Erlanger; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
John J. Dodson, 74, of Bellevue, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired coal miner, a member of Disabled American Veterans and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Jeffery Dotson and Ronald Dotson, both of Bellevue, and Larry Dotson of Cold Spring; a brother, Dallas Dotson of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Josie Dotson, Corrine Eggers, Julia Justice, Mary Justice and Linda Spradlin, all of Columbus; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Robert James Gantenberg, 74, of Fort Wright, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday at Villa Springs Care Center, Erlanger.
He was a retired design engineer with Cincinnati Milacron and a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and was an accomplished clarinet player.
Survivors include his wife, Coralynn L. Gantenberg; sons, James B. Gantenberg of Chicago, Michael R. Gantenberg of Cincinnati, Nicholas S. Gantenberg of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Andy J. Gantenberg of Erlanger; daughters, Tinsley A. Richter of Dayton, Ohio, and Lisa M. Gantenberg of Fort Wright; sisters, Mary Jo Wicher of Fort Wright and Marjorie Kordenbrock of Fort Thomas; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Roe Dale "Giz" Lang, 51, of Brooksville, died Saturday at his home. He was an electrician with East Kentucky Power Co.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Holland Lang; a son, Michael D. Lang of South Carolina; and a daughter, Michelle D. Lang of Brooksville.

Ruby Patterson, 66, of Williamstown died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Grant County.

Gladys Hawkins Roberts, 87, of Carrollton, died Sunday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a retired executive with Holiday Inn.
Survivors include a son, Charles E. Roberts of Carrollton; a sister, Mary Turner of Vevay, Ind.; one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Port Royal Cemetery.
William Russel Stevens, 97, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:15 p.m. Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was a retired president and chief executive officer of the Stevens Co., Newport, and a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas. He was a member of American Society of Heating and Refrigeration Engineers, the Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club and Campbell County Historical Society. His wife, Thelma Ziegler Stevens, died in 1998.
A daughter, Jean Stevens Hoffman, died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, William R. Stevens of Venice, Fla.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John C. Straub Sr., 71, of Fairview, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired warehouse worker with Squeri Foods, Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Mardis Straub; sons, Paul Straub of Fairfield, Ohio, John Straub Jr. of Hamilton, Ohio, Clifford Straub of Alexandria, Walter Straub of Newport and Bobby Straub of Ross, Ohio; daughters, Cheryl Sword and Sonya Williamson, both of Ross; a stepson, John Mardis of Covington; a stepdaughter, Rebecca Neace of Covington; a sister, Mary Jane Cornett of Summerville, Ohio; 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Grace J. Takacy, 84, of Williamstown, died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown. She was a registered nurse and a member of St. William Church, Williamstown.
Survivors include a son, Ted Takacy of Williamstown; a brother, Ross Jameson of Easley, S.C.; a sister, Lyda Smith of Pendleton, S.C.; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Easley, S.C.
Hildreth Venable, 86, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Virginia J. Ziegenhardt, 88, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Edwin F. Ziegenhardt of Cincinnati; daughters, Carol A. Riddle and Holly K. Ziegenhardt, both of Cold Spring; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
